Story By: CAMDEN PROUD / OSWEGO SPEEDWAY – OSWEGO, NY – While Oswego Speedway’s fan favorite Memorial Day Weekend program featuring the Jim Shampine, Jack Murphy and Tony White Memorial events for the Novelis Supermodifieds, ISMA Supermodifieds and Pathfinder Bank SBS will not officially take place until Saturday, race fans and teams will have the opportunity for a taste of what to expect this coming weekend throughout the evening tomorrow.
From 6-10pm on Friday, May 26, the speedway will hold a ‘Super Spectacle’ Open Practice session for the three divisions competing this weekend which in total will race in over 200 laps of action come Saturday afternoon at the Steel Palace. The huge racing program will include the ‘King of Wings IX’ for the winged warriors of the International Supermodified Association.
Many ISMA, Supermodified and SBS teams are expected to shake down their machines for Friday night. The tiki bar will be open throughout the practice session with free grandstand admission while pit passes are available for $25.
All of the action gets underway at 1:30pm on Saturday with the start of hot laps before ISMA time trials take to the track promptly at 4pm followed by the SBS and non-wing Supermodified divisions. Racing will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of time trials.
Novelis Fan Can Chase Opens During Memorial Weekend Triple Header Special
The Oswego Speedway and Novelis, the series sponsor of the famed Supermodified division, are proud to announce the return of the popular ‘Novelis Fan Can Chase’ in 2017. In the past seasons, this recycling partnership has surpassed the million mark in recyclable cans, resulting in over $70,000 being donated back to various community initiatives by Novelis. This is thanks to the generous race fans that have donated an average of over 100,000 cans for each of the past nine seasons in exchange for race tickets and other Oswego Speedway prizes.
As in years past, there will once again be three “Get Your Can to the Speedway” race nights in 2017. Night #1 – May 27th 1:30-3:30, Night #2 July 1st 4:30-6:00, Night #3 – August 19 4:00-6:00
In order to drop cans for the collection you must show a Speedway entry ticket from that night of racing. You can pickup your tickets at the box office before dropping cans to the Novelis and Scriba Bottle and Can Return collection center in front of the Speedway.
The recycling can program prizes offered for 2017 will again focus on reducing the overall cost of a night at the Speedway for fans. Budweiser International Classic Weekend tickets and season passes will still be the primary prizes that are awarded.
Since all fans must purchase a race ticket on the dates of the collections to earn any prizes that are offered, some fans will instantly get a break on their night choice inside the Speedway. The donation of 100-199 cans with NYS deposit stamped on them from the same household will earn one family member a $7 food voucher for the concession stands on that night. Households with donations of 200-499 cans will earn (1) General Admission ticket for a future regular race night, while those who donate between 500-999 cans will be rewarded with (2) General Admission tickets for a future regular race night and one chance to win a 2-Seat Supermodified ride to be raffled that night.
All households with donations of 1,000 or more will win guaranteed general admission passes for two on Saturday and Sunday of Budweiser International Classic Weekend. Only one reward, per household, per redemption can be cashed in on a single race night. Once a household donates to a certain prize level (100, 200, 500, 1000) they will receive only that level’s rewards, not all those below as well. Please refer to the prize level chart listed below.
The collection totals for fans will be kept for all three events. After the Saturday, August 19 collection date the top 12 fans in season long ‘Novelis Fan Can Chase’ totals will qualify as prize winners in the 2017 Novelis can collection contest. The top donating household for the season will earn first choice of the following prizes: (2) 2018 regular season pit passes, (2) 2018 regular season reserved seat tickets or (2) 2018 regular season SkyDeck passes.
The second highest donating household will have their choice of the two remaining prizes; while third will earn the final prize.
Fans representing households from 4th through 12th positions will all receive 2017 grandstand general admission for two on Saturday and Sunday of Budweiser International Classic Weekend.
