Column By: MIKE WARREN / KING OF DIRT – VERNON, NY – On Sunday night the KOD crew made their way to the friendly confines of the Utica-Rome Speedway for a double header with the Pro Stocks and Sportsman.
It is always a good time when you head out to the Action Track of the East, and this was no different on what was a scorching hot day in Central NY.
Things got started with group time trials, which are always interesting with many outsiders to the series, even though we are technically the invaders as part of the series.
Cousin Luke Horning and Rocky Warner got things started with the quick times of the night, and after their heat races looked to be in good positioning going toward the feature event.
However, only one of those features were completed as the Pro Stocks have been PPD until August 20th, the next time the series is in action at Utica-Rome.
Moving back to the Sportsman, Weedsport speedway’s event getting rained out set up an interesting last consolation event that saw Dave Marcuccilli start last, and go on to win, cementing his place in the field.
Any thoughts of a barnburner in the feature event though were dashed early, as Rocky Warner took less than 10 laps to get to the front of the field, dominating the event for his 6th career King Of Dirt Series win.
The Sportsman Series will now take a break until July 15th, in what will be my homecoming to the Lebanon Valley Speedway, in a race where outside of Jeff Watson and Cody Hunt, the tour regulars under no circumstance are at an advantage, despite who has won there in the past.
The Pro Stocks return back to action on July 7th at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway for some Full Fender Firecracker at the Great Race Place.
