Story By: RON SZCZERBA / FONDA SPEEDWAY – FONDA, NY – With only three Saturday evening racing events left on the schedule before the Fonda Speedway closes for the annual Fonda Fair, points become the topic of conversation and what some of the drivers are focusing on. This Saturday, August 4 all regular divisions will be in action on Satch Sales & Service Night with racing starting at 7:00 p.m.
Looking at the current point standings in the modified division after last Saturday’s racing program, Bobby Varin leads the way with 568 followed closely by Josh Hohenforst with 560, Jeremy Wilder with 538, Rocky Warner with 490, and defending track champion Tim Fuller with 482. Varin and Fuller are the only two drivers in the top five with feature wins, Varin with three and Fuller with one.
Ray Zemken currently leads the way in the sportsman division with 534 points and is followed by Nick Scavia with 521, Tony Farone with 518, Cody Clark with 506, and Chad Edwards with 504. Scavia and Edwards are the only two drivers in the top five in points in their division with wins this season, Scavia with three wins while Edwards has one single victory.
Defending track champion Kenny Gates currently leads the way in the pro stock division point standings with 590 and is followed in the top five by Chuck Dumblewski with 549, Josh Coonradt with 544, Ivan Joslin with 512, and AJ Walters with 489. Gates has a total of five wins so far this season while Dumblewski and Coonradt have one win apiece, Coonradt’s win being the first of his career in the division at Fonda.
Jason Samrov leads the street stock points with 604 and is followed in the top five by defending track champion Johnny Young with 598, Cliff Haslun with 556, Rob VanAernam with 486, and Michael Arnold with 458. Samrov has a total of five wins in the division so far this year while Young has three, VanAernam has two, and Haslun has one.
Derrick McGrew Jr. leads the limited sportsman point standings with 622 followed by Michael McCallion with 548, Dylan Eldred with 402, defending track champion Cory White with 300, and Bill Port with 238. McGrew’s six wins in the division so far leads the way in that statistic while Eldred and White both have a single feature win to their credit.
This Saturday at the Fonda Speedway Museum, last week’s sportsman feature winner Mark Mortensen will have his car on display from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Mortensen is the 2011 track champion in the division at Fonda and currently sits second on the all-time win list in the class with 20 feature victories.
