Story By: BRETT DEYO / SHORT TRACK SUPER SERIES – DELMAR, DE – Destination: Delmar. On Tuesday, April 30, the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco invades Delaware International Speedway for the Hurlock Auto & Speed ‘Diamond State 50’ special.
STSS big-block/small-block Modifieds race 50 laps for a total pay structure of more than $25,000: $5,000-plus to win, $1,000 for 10th and $400 to take the green flag in addition to contingency awards and bonuses.
The ‘Diamond State 50’ serves as Race No. 3 of the STSS Velocita-USA South Region for Modifieds, with previous stops in March at Georgetown (Del.) Speedway won by Stewart Friesen and Pa.’s Port Royal Speedway topped by Anthony Perrego.
Now, all attention turns to the Cathell family’s half-mile oval for the earliest scheduled running of the ‘Diamond State 50’ in the race’s history. The event also marks the first Modified event of the year at Delaware International.
Savannah, N.Y.’s ‘Super Matt’ Sheppard is the STSS Modified South Region point leader entering the ‘Diamond State 50’ over Friesen, David Van Horn, Anthony Perrego and Craig Von Dohren, all of whom are expected to be in attendance on the 30th.
Joining the STSS Modifieds on the card are the STSS Crate 602 Sportsman in their second South Region race of the season, a 20-lap main paying $1,500 to win, plus Southern Delaware Vintage Stock Cars and Delaware Super Trucks competing in feature-only events.

For the ‘Diamond State 50’ all gates open at 4 p.m. A drivers’ meeting is planned for 6 p.m. Hot laps hit the track at 6:30 p.m., with racing at 7:15 p.m.
Adult grandstand admission is $25. Students (ages 7-13) pay $5. Kids 6 and under are FREE.
Pit admission is $35 (no license required). Students (ages 7-13) pay $10 for pit admittance and Kids 6 and under are FREE.
In the event of inclement weather, a rain date of May 1 is in place for this event.
