Story By: TIM BALTZ / MOHAWK INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY – HOGANSBURG, NY – With the regular season in the books the attention shifts to the annual Mohawk Nationals weekend which will feature two full days of racing action with all four DirtCar Series in action along with a double show for the Mod Lite division.
On Friday night 97.3 CKON FM radio will present the DirtCar 358 Modified Series for round number seven.
Five-time track champion Billy Dunn won the most recent event at Can Am over reigning track champion Tim Fuller and points leader Erick Rudolph, who came from a rained out Super DirtCar Series race in Quebec to make the show and finish up third last Saturday night. Rudolph holds the points lead but with his commitments to the Super DirtCar Series at Brewerton Friday night, it leaves a chance for series regulars to capitalize and gain valuable points.
Also on the card the DirtCar Pro Stock Series will hit the speedway. Rob Yetman, CD Beauchamp, Jocelyn Roy and many other tour regulars will be on hand to capture a coveted Mohawk victory. The race has seen five different drivers claim wins in the last five tour races at MIR with Mike White, Marc Lalonde and Sid Harmer Jr. collecting their first ever tour wins.
The MIR Sportsman Series will crown their 2019 champion. With many drivers running the DirtCar Sportsman series event the next night, many outside invaders could play a part in how this title chase plays out as Shane Pecore and Brianna Ladouceur lead the charge. The Can Am Mod Lite Series will also be on hand and heavy favorite Jeff May will be in town to defend his race win from a year ago but 2019 track champion Kevin Foster, Nick Mallette, Ian Bressett and Harley Brown will be there to challenge.
Pit gates will open at 3pm with spectator gates open at 5pm. Hot laps and time trials will begin at 6:30pm.
The action on Saturday will see the Big Block Modified Super DirtCar Series take to the track.
Tim Fuller not only won the DirtCar 358 Series event but also claimed the Super DirtCar Series win as well, he’ll be in search of his third straight big block win but series points leader Matt Sheppard and Jimmy Phelps, who have three tour wins at Mohawk will be on hand to try to deny that. Lightning Larry Wight, Mat Williamson, Billy Decker, Danny Johnson and many others will be on hand for a top prize, which pays a cool $10,000 to the winner.
The DirtCar Sportsman North Regional Series will also be on hand and once again Shane Pecore and Brianna Ladouceur lead the way over a stellar field with Quebec star Kaven Poliquin Airborne winner Travis Bruno and Ryan Stabler making up the top 5 in the regional points standings. Track regular Robert Delormier is the most recent tour winner at Cornwall on August 22nd, he’ll also be a heavy favorite for the win.
Jeff May will once again try to defend his 2018 race win as the Stars Mod Lite Series takes to the track. With Kevin Foster leading a strong contingent of track regulars, it’ll be tough for the series regulars that plan on being in attendance.
Pit gates open at 3pm with general admission gates opening at 4pm. Hot laps and time trials begin at 6:15pm.
