Story By: TIM BALTZ / MOHAWK INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY – HOGANSBURG, NY – After the 2020 season was effectively cancelled due to COVID-19, the 2021 year saw some slight changes with the DIRTCar Sportsman division becoming the headline division.
In an effort to bring back the mighty 358 Modifieds, which have been the headline division at the speedway since 1987, St. Lawrence Radiology one of the biggest supporters of racing in the Northeast, will be the title sponsor for the evening, as the first of a four-race series is set to go this coming Thursday night. Twin Leaf Stores has taken over as title sponsor of the MIR 358 Modified Series which has been around since 2009, and will kick off the first event with a 45 lap, $2500 to win event. Also on the schedule is a 50 lap event for the Crossroads Tobacco Sportsman division which will pay $1200 to the winner and $125 to start. Both divisions will draw for group time trials to begin the night with the top 12 drivers from the heat events, redrawing for starting positions in both feature events.
Track officials have also decided that any Novice Sportsman competitor that would like to attempt to qualify for the Sportsman race Thursday night will not lose their Novice status for 2021.
Along with the 358 Modified return and the 50 lapper for the Sportsman, the DIRTCar Pro Stocks will make their second appearance of the season with a special event paying $500 to the winner. The Pro Stocks made a surprise return on June 11th, with Massena’s Kevin Fetterly Jr. picking up the win.
Mod Lites have been one of the popular divisions since 2011 at MIR and the division will be on hand for a 20 lap contest. Both Pro Stock and Mod Lite events will be heads up start for the feature.
Pit gates are set to open Thursday at 4pm with spectator gates open at 5. The first heat event will roll trackside at 7pm with hot laps and time trials for 358 Modified and Sportsman taking to the speedway at around 6:30pm
One of the most anticipated shows of the season and you won’t want to miss out on your chance to see the Modifieds once again make some noise, and it’s all brought to you by St. Lawrence Radiology.
