Story By: TYLER ALTMEYER / TONY STEWART RACING – BROWNSBURG, IN – Despite only one event on the weekend schedule, a quick, Friday night visit to Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas, Fargo, North Dakota’s Donny Schatz remained focused and determined, eventually cashing in for his 43rd top-five finish of the 2021 season, forced to battle by Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing teammate, Kerry Madsen, in the process.
Schatz, driver of the Carquest Auto Parts/Curb Records/Ford Performance/Sage Fruit/Digital Ally/Advance Auto Parts/Rush Truck Centers/Absolute Automation and Security/Hunt Brothers Pizza/TicketSmarter/J&J Auto Racing/No. 15 sprint car, finished second to solidify his top-five statistic, climbing ahead three spots after starting fifth on the feature grid. The ten-time World of Outlaws champion was a threat for much of the 30-lap distance, actually pressuring KCP Racing’s Gio Scelzi for second before Scelzi gained control over race-long leader, Kerry Madsen. Scelzi made his winning move on lap 27, utilizing a single-file restart to slide by the “Madman.” Schatz ultimately mimicked the Fresno, California-native to also sneak by Madsen before the finish.
A series of cautions would negate most of Schatz’ late race momentum.
“I was hoping we’d get more traffic, but the yellows kept coming,” Schatz said, who is now third in the World of Outlaws driver championship chase. “Gio was so good on those restarts, it’s just the way it played out. The guys did a great job and we made the right adjustments.”
The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series will head south for a Halloween weekend doubleheader at Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Oklahoma, on Friday, October 29, and Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, on Saturday, October 30. After that, the 2021 season concludes with the NGK/NTK World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte on November 4-6.
