Donations Needed To Restore Northeast Dirt Modified Hall Of Fame Driver Portraits

Story By: BUFFY SWANSON / NORTHEAST DIRT MODIFIED HALL OF FAME AND MUSEUM – WEEDSPORT, NY – The heart and highlight of the Northeast Dirt Modified Museum in Weedsport, NY, are the treasured hand-drawn portraits of more than 100 championship drivers that have been installed on its walls over the past 30 years — all the greats from seven states and two Canadian provinces, who have thrilled fans from the 1940s to the present day.

But over time, 39 of the 105 existing driver portraits have noticeably deteriorated, necessitating the need to establish a targeted drive to fund their restoration.

“When word reached me that the Northeast Dirt Modified Museum was looking for help in refurbishing some of their older driver Hall of Fame images, I knew that it was something we would want to lend a hand in,” said Fred Voorhees, founder of Auto Racing Research Associates (ARRA), an organization of almost 30 historians dedicated to documenting the sport’s history. “We are proud to be the first to step up and give whatever we can to help in restoring the portraits enshrined in the Hall of Fame. And we urge others who can do so to offer their help, as well.”

In addition to the ARRA group, which contributed to the general fund, Gary Beagell and friends of Five Mile Point Speedway have made arrangements to sponsor the work to be done on the portraits of Chuck Akulis, Mike Colsten and Carl Nagel, three of their hometown heroes.

The cost to refurbish each portrait is $75. If you are a fan or family member of any of the following racing legends, won’t you consider sponsoring the restoration of their Hall of Fame driver portrait to pristine condition?

Located on the grounds of Weedsport Speedway, the Northeast Dirt Modified Museum and Hall of Fame was established in 1992, to showcase the rich and storied history of Modified stock car competition on the Northeastern oval dirt tracks — the cars, drivers, owners, mechanics, builders, promoters, media members and memorabilia of the sport.

The Museum serves as the stage for the annual Hall of Fame program which has inducted 105 championship drivers and honored 142 accomplished award winners from throughout the region over the past 30 years. As always, the Hall of Fame ceremonies are free and open to the public. In recent years, the event has been enhanced by festive pre- and post-ceremony receptions hosted by Weedsport Speedway.
