Tanner English Closes Out ’21 Campaign With Runner-Up Finish At Gateway Dirt Nationals

Story By: RYAN DELPH / RIGGS MOTORSPORTS – NORRIS CITY, IL – Tanner English and Riggs Motorsports put an exclamation mark on their 2021 campaign from December 2-4 with a strong weekend in the 5th edition of the ‘Gateway Dirt Nationals’ at The Dome at America’s Center in downtown St. Louis, Missouri.

Last Thursday night in his $5,000 to win preliminary show, Tanner laid down the sixth quickest lap in Group B during the qualifying session before running second in his stacked heat race.

After starting the 25-lap prelim feature from the outside of the sixth row, Tanner stayed out of trouble during the wild contest and moved past nine competitors en route to a sterling third place podium effort behind only winner Tyler Carpenter and runner-up Bob Gardner!

By virtue of the top four performance, Tanner automatically transferred into Saturday evening’s season-ending ‘Gateway Dirt Nationals’ grand finale, which boasted a whopping $30,000 paycheck. The Benton, Kentucky ace drew the outside of the front row for the start of the 40-lapper and ran in the second spot throughout the contest that was held indoors on a temporary 1/5-mile oval. At the checkers, Tanner was 0.717 seconds behind victor Tyler Carpenter and settled for the $15,000 payday for his runner-up showing!

“It was a great way to cap off our season by finishing on the podium in a couple of races during a marquee event like the Gateway Dirt Nationals,” commented English via telephone. “I thought starting that far back (in twelfth) on Thursday night that there was no way we could get up through there. But it was a wild race, some cars didn’t finish, and we were there to capitalize to grab the third transfer spot. Then on Saturday, we had a great car and we were in position to win that race if (Tyler) Carpenter’s right rear tire goes totally flat one set of corners before it actually does. It was an awesome year; however, and I can’t thank Riggs Motorsports, all of our crew, and each sponsor enough for all of their support!”

Tanner and his #81e team enjoyed a terrific 2021 racing season, which kicked off back in January at All-Tech Raceway in Ellisville, Florida. The Riggs Motorsports team was consistent all year long, as Tanner racked up 7 feature victories, 45 top five finishes, and 57 top ten performances in the 71 events that he entered. He also parlayed that same consistency on the DIRTcar Summer Nationals trail into a close third place finish in the final “Hell Tour” point standings.
