Column By: TOM WENNER / RPW – OAKS, PA – Sammy Martz Jr. is a young lion in the Northeast Dirt Modified racing scene.
At this past weekends Pioneer Pole Building Motorsports Racecar & Trade Show Sammy Jr. debuted a brand new 2022x Bicknell Dirt Modified race car.
Sammy is one of several young next generation Modified drivers who are hitting the tracks. Sammy was the 2021 Bridgeport Speedway 602 Crate Sportsman Champion while scoring 5 feature wins. Sammy Jr. also won in a 602 Crate at the Big Diamond Speedway in 2021.
For 2022, Sammy & The Martz Motorsports #24 Team are making the jump from 602 Crate Sportsman racing to 358 Spec Modified racing at Bridgeport Speedway. This will be the first time Sammy Jr. gets to race his father Sam Martz Sr. Sam Sr. & Sammy Jr. have raced the last several years at several tracks in the northeast, but never in the same division. The Martz family has raced at Bridgeport Speedway on the 5/8 Mile, Orange County Fair Speedway and now on the new Kingdom of Speed at Bridgeport Speedway. Sam Sr. won the rookie division title at the Flemington Speedway in 1990 and moved on to race successfully at several Northeast tracks over the past 30 years. Sam Sr. has won at Grandview Speedway, New Egypt Speedway, and Bridgeport Speedway during this the years.
Racing is a family sport for the Martz family. The entire family is involved at the track and they would not want it any other way. Sam Sr.’s Father Jimmy raced. Sam’s wife Chris was involved in racing before meeting Sam at Flemington Speedway. Chris and her sisters were supporters of the Billy Pauch Sr. race teams of the 80-90’s. Angelica Martz, Chris and Sam Sr.’s daughter held the title of Ms. Bridgeport for a year and did a great job with the fans & drivers interaction at Bridgeport.
For 2022, The Martz team is well stocked for a strong season. Sammy Jr. & Sr. will race for the 358 Foley Cat Modified Championship at Bridgeport. Sammy Jr.’s goal will be Rooke of the Year for the Modifieds. Both Sam & Sammy Jr. love the new racy design of Bridgeport. Doug Rose and his staff have been great to the Martz Motorsports Team. For special events in 22’, Sammy Jr. will travel to Brett Deyo Short Track Super Series South races running his 602 Crate. You can find a fresh Big Block, 358 Spec and 602 Crates motor waiting for duty in the Martz shop. As the season progresses and resources and time allow you may see the Sam Sr. #3 and Sammy Jr. #24 pull in anywhere in the northeast. The team would like to hit Super Dirt Series races at local tracks like Bridgeport and Orange County’s Eastern States Weekend in the fall.
