Story By: ROBBY KNOWLES / AIRBORNE SPEEDWAY – PLATTSBURGH, NY – Airborne Speedway is set to kick off another season of short track racing entertainment this Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
The Plattsburgh facility will host the DIRTcar Sportsman Series on opening day, which is expected to bring some of the best Sportsman drivers from New York, Vermont, and the provinces of Quebec and Ontario. In addition to the DIRTcar Sportsman Series, Airborne’s regular racing divisions of Hartson Total Opening Renegades, Taylor Rental Street Stocks, and Northern Blacktopping Limited Sportsman will be in action for heat and feature races.
The format for the DIRTcar Sportsman Series will consist of drawing for time trial groups upon entering the speedway. Drivers will have timed laps to determine their starting position for heat races. The feature event will be 40-laps in distance and pay $1,000 to the winner. Airborne’s J&S Steel Sportsman division will be competing with the series and any Airborne Sportsman regular in attendance will receive show up points for the event.
Travis Bruno (Sportsman), Zack Daniels (Renegade), and Nate Smart (Street Stock) are the defending champions for their respective divisions, and will look to defend their titles in 2022.
Racing action gets underway on Saturday at 6 p.m. with grandstands opening at 4 p.m. Admission prices are set at $12 for adults and free for children age 12 and under.
