Story BY: EVAN CANFIELD / NY PENN IMCA MODIFIED SERIES – MONROETON, PA – The NY Penn IMCA Modified Series made its return to The Hill Speedway in Monroeton, PA for the Billy Maynard Memorial on July 8th, the seventh race in the 2022 campaign.
With a familiar facility came a familiar face in victory lane. The up and down season for Eddie Sites took another high as the Towanda, PA driver scored his fourth victory of the season in dominating fashion.
Two-time winner this season, Rodney Morgan, started the 25-lap feature on the front row with series rookie Jason Sullivan alongside. When the green flag flew, Morgan would immediately jump out to the lead, as Sullivan would fall into the clutches of Brad Sites and Aaron Benjamin. Sites would begin to track down Morgan early, looking to score his second series victory in a row after winning at Bradford Speedway last weekend. His bid for the top spot would end on lap five, as he would find the inside berm in turn four and spin around, bringing out the race’s first caution flag.
On the restart, Keith Jack Lamphere and Shawn Bruce would make contact down the backstretch while battling inside the top five, sending Bruce spinning into turn three to keep the race under the yellow flag. On the following restart, seventh place starter Eddie Sites would work his way around the outside of Morgan to take the top spot away. After completing one lap, Bruce would again face backwards in turn three, ending his night. On the following restart, Rodney Morgan’s strong night would come to a halt as he would spin out of the second position in turn three, collecting JW Lamphere in the process and moving Ray McClure to the runner-up spot, with 14th place starter Jake Maynard getting to third.
From there, the race would go green to lap 16, when Jason Sullivan and Bobby Maynard came together in turn two. Sites would continue to keep the field at bay, while McClure and Maynard tried to hold back the charges of Aaron Benjamin and Brad Sites. The caution would come out again on lap 17 for a spinning Rodney Morgan, then again on the following lap for Harry Ely and JW Lamphere making hard contact, taking both drivers out of the race.
Eddie Sites would jump out to the lead once again as McClure tried to close in, while Brad Sites would make his way past Jake Maynard and Gary Lamphere to move into a podium position. A caution on lap 20 for a slowing Keith Jack Lamphere would be the last time the race would get held up, as the final five laps would run out with Sites taking the dominant victory, being followed by McClure, Brad Sites, Gary Lamphere and hard charger Jake Maynard.
The next race for the NY Penn IMCA Modified Series will be at the Clinton County Speedway on August 13th. It will be the first time that the series will be in action at the Pennsylvania oval.
