Story By: CHRIS MOORE / SHORT TRACK SUPER SERIES – VERNON, NY – For the 61. Next up for the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco is a trip to Utica-Rome Speedway for the ‘Richie Evans Remembered 61.’
The trip to the Route 5 oval will play the part of Round No. 7 of the River Valley Builders North Region, the first of two consecutive North Region races at the Vernon oval.
The event takes place on Thursday, July 21 as the stars of the STSS come in search of the $6,100-plus payday in honor of Richie Evans’ famed No. 61.
Savannah, N.Y.’s Matt Sheppard sits atop the North Region standings by 45-points over St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada’s Mat Williamson. Wurtsboro, N.Y.’s Danny Creeden rounds out the top three.
Sheppard – who calls Utica-Rome Speedway home on Friday nights – leads the Sunoco Modified championship chase at his home track as well.
Sprakers, N.Y.’s Stewart Friesen, fresh off his ‘Firecracker 50’ triumph at Fonda (N.Y.) Speedway, is the defending winner of the ‘Richie Evans Remembered’ in 2021.
A purse of more than $28,000 is up for grabs, with bonuses and contingency awards still to be added to the event.
The North Region stars take a break following the July 21 affair, returning to Utica-Rome Speedway on September 4 for the ‘New Yorker’ which also serves as Round No. 3 of the Halmar International ‘Elite’ Series.
The 50-lap affair awards the winner with a hefty $25,000 payday – the standard for the ‘Elite’ Series.
The STSS Crate 602 Sportsman join the July 21 program, racing for a $2,061 top prize in the Precision Hydraulic & Oil North Region.
Cream Ridge, N.J.’s Steve Davis continues to lead the standings by 37-points over Wallkill, N.Y.’s Travis Green. South New Berlin, N.Y.’s Payton Talbot rounds out the top three, 47 markers behind Davis.
