Story By: BIG DIAMOND SPEEDWAY – MINERSVILLE, PA – It all comes down to this Friday at Big Diamond Speedway. It’s what the racers have been aiming for since the gates opened in April.
Yes, it is championship night!
The night where we crown our 2022 division champions. It has been a season that has had many twists and turns especially in the Insigner Performance Modified division where the title will come down to the last lap of the race this Friday night.
If the battle for the 2022 Insigner Performance Modified championship isn’t enough, the teams will also be racing for a winner’s share of $3,500. The points battle is a tight one with Brett Kressley currently leading Duane Howard by 30 points which calculates to less than two spots in the finishing order of the feature. Heat races could also play a big role in Friday night’s action as points are awarded per finishing position.
Kressley and Howard have battle for points supremacy the second half of the season with each taking turns leading the standings. These two have had a heated rivalry for the past few years which means neither driver will be willing to give an inch come Friday night. If Kressley prevails, it would be his first ever Big Diamond Modified title and should Howard win it would be his ninth Big Diamond championship.
Should Kressley and Howard both falter, Craig Von Dohren who sits third in the standings and has been on a tear lately will be right there to jump into the mix. Nick Rochinski and Louden Reimert are currently fourth and fifth in the standings both with chances to move up as high as third.
In the USS Achey Crate 602 Sportsman division, Brendan Edgar will be the 2022 season champion barring a disaster. For Edgar to lose the title, he would have to not qualify for the feature event and second place Danny Buccafusca would have to win both his heat and feature. Logan Watt has third place all but wrapped up with Kyle Kania and Matt Yoder the top five. This Friday night the Crate 602 sportsman will race for $750 to win with $100 to take the green.
After last week’s Crazy 8’s four feature program, Alex Schoffstall finds himself back in the driver’s seat for the 2022 title. Mike Reichert led the title chase going into last Friday but Schoffstall by virtue of his two wins to go along with a second and third place finish vaulted him back to the top. Going into championship night, Schoffstall leads Reichert by 180 points. Friday night’s 20-lap feature for the Roadrunners will pay $400 to the winner.
Once Championship night is completed, all eyes turn to Coalcracker weekend which culminates with the running of the Jack Rich Inc, Coalcracker 72 for the Insigner Performance Modifieds paying $17,000 to the winner.
