Story By: MIKE TRAVERSE / ORANGE COUNTY FAIR SPEEDWAY – MIDDLETOWN, NY – As the race towards the Orange County Fair Speedway United Rentals DIRTcar Big Block Modified Championship continues on, the field of potential championship contenders will be trimmed from 12 to 8 this coming Saturday, August 6th.
The 3 Big Block races that follow this week’s event (August 11th, 13th and 20th) will determine the Final Four that will be racing for the championship on Champions Night, August 27th.
This year’s Big Block Modified champion will receive $30,000.
With their wins in the Round of 12, Anthony Perrego and Matt Sheppard have already locked into the Round of 8. Sheppard currently leads the points with Max McLaughlin 2nd and Perrego 3rd. Mike Gular is 4th with Danny Creeden 5th, just 1 point behind Gular. Tyler Boniface is 6th, 3 points behind Gular.
Point positions 7 thru 10 are separated by 21 points with Jimmy Horton 7th, Billy VanInwegen 8th, Dillon Steuer 9th and Tanner VanDoren 10th,
Matt Janiak and Chris Shultz are tied for 11th. But they are trailing 8th place VanInwegen by 95 points. Either of those two drivers would need a win to advance into the Round of 8.
The other divisions that will be in action this Saturday will be the H.O. Penn 358 Small Block Modifieds, and the Arkel Motors Sportsman.
It will also be a big night for the North East Parts Group Street Stocks as they will be racing in the Marky Traverse Memorial Race. A special dash is also scheduled to honor the memory of Street Stock racer, Mark Rutheford.
With his recent 358 wins, Perrego has padded his lead in the 358 points to 58 over VanInwegen. Horton is 3rd with Creeden 4th and Craig Mitchell 5th.
With his 2 top 10 finishes in this past Saturday’s Twin 20’s Sportsman races, Mike Sabia has taken over the top spot in the division’s points. He leads Cody Higbie by 18. Travis Green is 3rd in points, 58 off of the lead. Drew Boniface was the only driver to finish in the top 5 in both features this past Saturday and he is 4th in the standings with Ryan Neiger 5th.
With his win this past Saturday in the Precision Hydraulic and Oil Rookie Sportsman feature, Joey Conklin now has a 22 point lead over Fred Pavia. Mike Mikulski is 3rd, Mark Shupp 4th and Mike Weslowski 5th.
In the Street Stocks, Bob Sleight leads Dillon Gannon by 26 points going into this Saturday’s action. Mike Vigiletti is 3rd, Jack Beaumont 4th and Jim Hajkowski 5th.
