Story By: KING OF DIRT – WEST HAVEN, VT – When it came down to the Final Four drivers in the King Of Dirt Racing Fall Madness Most Popular Driver Tournament for Limited Sportsman, there was a need to do it differently.
Every registered driver in the division had an opportunity to vote for their choice to receive the award. Evan Roberts of Devil’s Bowl earned the honors by a slim margin over Chris Crane Jr. of Albany-Saratoga.
Evan Roberts calls Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Fair Haven, VT home Saturday nights where he had a championship kind of season. Roberts raced his way to three wins during the 2022 season with his first coming back on Saturday May 14th and his last win coming on Saturday June 25th.
Devil’s Bowl Champion Evan Roberts faired well in Elmo’s Speed Supply King Of Dirt Racing Limited Sportsman Series points utilizing those three wins, plus a pair of second place finishes, two third place finishes, three fourth place finishes, and two seventh place finishes to land fifth overall on the leaderboard at seasons end.
He would enter into the KOD Fall Madness Most Popular Driver tournament for Limited Sportsman drivers by virtue of his point standings, where he’d overcome all odds thanks to his fan base propelling him to the Final Four, where a different voting approach was taken after an unfortunate situation arose, which nobody saw coming.
None the less the Fletcher, VT racer was voted Most Popular by his peers for 2022 with his Friend Construction, DuPont Auto & Body, J&L Hardware, and Premier Paving number 50X Bicknell Racing Chassis. He pulled in 41% of the votes cast, earning him the honors. Not to shabby for a 16-year-old driver with a bright racing future.
Chris Crane Jr. from Albany-Saratoga was voted runner up by his peers with 26% of the votes cast, while Zach Dufel of Fonda Speedway was third with 21% of the votes cast. Bubba McPhee from Devil’s Bowl rounded out the top four with 12% of the total votes cast.
KOD FALL MADNESS MOST POPULAR LIMITED SPORTSMAN DRIVER NOTES:
Evan Roberts has the distinction of earning the first ever Limited Sportsman Most Popular Driver award, and he is the last driver to earn such an award at King Of Dirt Racing.
Through the adversity bestowed upon the final round, the Drivers Choice award was born. KOD utilized drivers voting for their peers to determine the final winner. Doing this same process and renaming the award encompasses respect, improvement, and sportsmanship as voted on by a driver’s peers. That’s special.
Congratulations to all 16 drivers who were included, and kudos to Evan Roberts on being voted by his peers at the first ever Limited Sportsman Most Popular Driver award winner.
