Story By: TYLER ALTMEYER / TONY STEWART RACING – BROWNSBURG, IN – It was a successful two-day stretch in the south for Fargo, North Dakota’s Donny Schatz and Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing, not only completing their two-race swing through Alabama and Mississippi with back-to-back top-five finishes, but simultaneously climbing ahead from ninth in the championship standings to seventh – an all positive momentum shift in Schatz’ quest for an eleventh Series title.
Schatz, ace of the Advance Auto Parts, Carquest, Ford Motor Company, Ford Performance, MadJax XSeries, Curb Records, Sage Fruit, Absolute Automation and Security, Hunt Brothers Pizza, Elliott’s Custom Trailers and Carts, No. 15 sprint car, kicked off his recent weekend with a fifth-place score at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Alabama, on Friday, March 24. The ten-time champ started eighth before powering his way to fourth, later forced to take a backseat to fellow championship contender, David Gravel.
Impressive enough, Schatz did one better the following evening and finished fourth in Magnolia Motor Speedway’s Black Ice Brawl on Saturday, March 25, battling in the third spot early before dueling with Carson Macedo and David Gravel. Although each clawed their way ahead, Schatz maintained focus and eventually worked his way back to fourth, reclaiming the position from Macedo.
Schatz’ Magnolia stat card also included a dash appearance, in which he started and finished third, as well as a runner-up performance in his respective heat race.
As mentioned, Schatz is now seventh in the World of Outlaws championship standings padded by five top-ten outcomes in his first eight starts, four of which are top-fives.
