Story By TYLER ALTMEYER / TONY STEWART RACING – BROWNSBURG, IN – Ten-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion, Donny Schatz, made the most of his visit to Volusia Speedway Park on Sunday and Monday, March 5-6, and ultimately capped the weekend with not only consistency, but an incredible display of perseverance, kicking things off with an impressive hard charger-worthy performance in the Spring Showdown opener on Sunday, March 5.
In all, Schatz accumulated three top-ten scores in the two-day/three-feature program, steadily improving as the weekend progressed.
Schatz, driver of Tony Stewart’s Advance Auto Parts, Carquest, Ford Motor Company, Ford Performance, Nivel Parts & Manufacturing, Curb Records, Sage Fruit, Absolute Automation and Security, Hunt Brothers Pizza, Elliott’s Custom Trailers and Carts, No. 15 sprint car, earned his aforementioned hard charger award after starting 21st, forced to do so after ignition problems proved terminal during his respective Sunday night heat race. Nevertheless, Schatz rallied big, climbing from row 11 to finish seventh at the final checkers.
Impressive enough, later that evening, Schatz finished fifth in the DIRTcar Nationals make-up feature, eventually capping the entire Volusia slate with a fourth-place score in Monday’s Spring Showdown finale. The Fargo, North Dakota, native started fifth in the final feature before fading slightly to seventh, forced to battle by Logan Schuchart to enter the top five, then powering around Brad Sweet for fourth with less than ten to go.
With all results tallied, Schatz is now eighth in the World of Outlaws championship standings, continuing his quest for an 11th World of Outlaws championship.
Donny Schatz and Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing will continue their 2023 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series campaign with a visit to Pennsylvania Posse Country, rejoining the Greatest Show On Dirt in a Port Royal Speedway doubleheader on Friday and Saturday, March 10-11.
