Story By: KASEY KREIDER / LINDA’S SPEEDWAY – JONESTOWN, PA – A technical Linda’s Speedway surface allowed the opportunity for the cream to rise to the top of the Mt. Gretna Roller Rink 270 Micro Sprint division on Friday night.
Veteran driver “Hotrod” Brent Shearer motored through the pack from the 10th starting position to claim his first win of the season – and establish himself as a contender for the National Open – aboard the Jake Dupler-owned No. 1A.
The race looked early on as if it could have been a runaway for Matt Fernsler, as the Annville driver took the lead on the opening lap and opened up an advantage of over three seconds between himself and the rest of the field. All of that went away on lap 13, though, as Fernsler clipped one of the infield tires through turns 1 and 2 and spun sideways with broken steering on the No. 19 machine.
Jason Paisley inherited the lead as a result, but it wasn’t long before Shearer found the clean air himself. The Manheim native went from third to first in just over a lap to claim the top spot. Shearer was then left to hold off 12th-place starter Brandon Heist over the closing laps. Although the defending track champion provided a brief challenge, Shearer pulled away over the final seven-lap run to secure his victory.
Championship leader Mike Boyer brought home a seventh-place result, which tightened the points gap between himself and Brandon Heist to just four markers with three points races remaining.
For the first time in 2024, the Charger division saw a repeat winner at the quarter-mile on Friday night. After Austin Webster and Chucky Kimmel were involved in an incident racing for the lead, Chris Warren swooped in to pick up the pieces and scored his second win of the year. Warren has a five-point lead over Kimmel in the standings with two points races remaining.
The Xcel 600 Modified Tour returned to Linda’s on Friday night as well. Milford, NJ’s Bobby Butler hopped aboard Doug Borger’s No. M1 and parked it in the winner’s circle from the ninth starting spot. “The Conductor” made an outside pass on Eric Whitby and led the final eight laps of the feature en route to the checkered flag.
After being passed for the win on the last lap three weeks ago, E. J. Hatch sealed the deal on Friday night and brought an end to Hailey Eroh’s five-race winning streak in the J&J Auto Body Junior Slingshots. Hatch held off a charge from Cameron Hartz and ultimately led wire-to-wire to score his second win of the season.
Linda’s Speedway is back in action next Friday, Aug. 30 for a “Living Legends Night” in honor of current Hoffer Paving All Star Slingshot competitor and five-time Linda’s Speedway track champion Brett Bieber. Joining the All Star Slingshots in the action will be the Mt. Gretna Roller Rink 270 Micro Sprints, the Stolz Stove Sales Winged 600 Micro Sprints, and the Front Wheel Drive division.
