Story By: TIM BALTZ / CAN-AM SPEEDWAY – LAFARGEVILLE, NY – It was the annual Night of Champions at the Can-Am Speedway Friday night as four track titles were handed out on North Counties Supply night.
Plenty of familiar faces were back in victory lane with a few new drivers making an appearance as well.
Billy Dunn won the DIRTcar 358-Modified feature over Lucas Fuller and Shaun Shaw. Tim Fuller finished fourth on the night and walked away with the 2024 track championship. Lance Willix was fifth.
Also after getting rained out earlier in the year our local first responders were on hand for an intermission parade. The fans showed their appreciation with a standing ovation during the parade and we thank them for all they do.
Tim Fuller already had locked up his fourth straight Whitesboro Plowshop DIRTCar 358 Modified title two weeks ago but was looking to add another win to his season. On this night a Fuller would lead the way but it was Lucas Fuller taking the lead early over Derek Webb and Shaun Shaw. Lucas had a great car in the early laps and was able to pull away from Webb as he looked to hold on for his first career win. After a crash involving Nick Webb on the front stretch on lap 4, Fuller continued his great run and was pulling away to a comfortable lead, but 6 time track champion Billy Dunn was on the move using the outside lane around the track. Dunn moved to third around Shaun Shaw then one lap later, would find the way by Derek Webb for the runner up spot. As the laps clicked off Billy Dunn was stronger every lap and closed in on Lucas Fuller for the lead. On lap 18 Dunn took over the top spot on the outside lane and started to drive away. Over the final laps Billy Dunn put the car on auto pilot to score his 3rd win of the season. Lucas Fuller finished up second over Shaun Shaw, Tim Fuller and Lance Willix.
Mike Fowler was looking to lock up the track title in the Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman division, but two drivers were also looking for their first track titles as well. Eric Nier and Gavin Eisele sat second and third with an outside chance at the title. Nier went right to work after starting towards the front, taking the lead from early pace setter Trevor Gibbons on lap 5 of the 20 lap event. Nier was able to set a quick pace and pulled away easily in the early laps, leaving Josh Reome, Jessica Power and Eisele to battle with Trevor Gibbons for second. Behind the top 5 Mike Fowler was being patient staying just inside the top 10 as he moved to the 8th spot on lap 10 which was more than enough to lock up the title, no matter what Eric Nier did. As the laps clicked off Eric Nier was more focused on getting his first career win and did everything perfect on this night, as he dominated the feature for his first ever win after many years of trying. Josh Reome came home second with Jessica Power, Gavin Eisele and Ryan Shanahan the top 5. Mike Fowler crossed the line in 8th, which was more than plenty to secure his first Can-Am title.
Logan Brown has been the driver to beat in the Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman all season at Can Am. The Clayton driver was challenged in the early laps as Brianna Murtaugh led the opening laps but Brown managed to get by for the top spot on lap 3 and began to pull away. On lap 5 Genavieve Bartlett, who was running in the third spot, spun in turn 4. Tony Frezzo was not able to get his car stopped in time and slammed into the side of her car and rolled over, bringing out the red flag. Frezzo was not hurt while Bartlett was able to get repairs done and returned to the race. When the green flew it was Brown in control over Murtaugh, but Camdin Cook was on the move as he charged to the runner up spot with 3 laps to go but was running out of time to catch the leader. At the finish Logan Brown checked out and scored his division leading 7th win of the season. Camdin Cook, Brianna Murtaugh, Mason Rogers and Kent Miller completed the top 5.
Josh Verne Jr. was looking to put the cap on a third straight track title with a victory in the 20 lap Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint Car feature, but it was Tucker Donath leading the way over Verne and Ken Klinkowsky. The top two drivers started to drive away from the field, letting everyone know they would be the ones to beat. With the top two in control Andrew Hennessy made his way to third and began to run down Donath and Verne as they continued their battle for the lead. The race then turned into a three car battle as they entered traffic. On lap 11 Verne made his move for the lead but the yellow flew forcing a restart, putting Josh Verne Jr. in perfect position to challenge for the lead. When the green flew Josh Verne Jr. charged to the outside and made the winning move on lap 12. Andrew Hennessy was also able to get around Donath for 2nd but had a long way to go to catch the leader. Over the final 6 laps Josh Verne Jr. would go unchallenged to score his 4th win of the season, but more importantly lock up his third straight title in the division. Andrew Hennessy, Tucker Donath, George Sanford and Bruno Richard came across the line in the top 5.
The night finished off with a 15 lap Sundance Leisure Thundercar feature and Anthony St. Mary Jr. was the story of the evening. The Redwood native jumped into the lead and was fast in the early laps, but Francis White, who borrowed a car after a blown motor in the heat race, made his charge to the front, eventually taking second from Jared Gilson on lap 5 and made his run at the leader. Points leader Damien Bechler was trying to finish the night with a solid run as he ran in the number four spot through most of the 15 lap feature. Up front St. Mary and White put on a great battle for the lead as White tried several times to get by for the top spot, but St. Mary was up for the challenge. Over the final laps, Anthony St. Mary Jr. was not to be denied as he held on for his second in a row and 4th win of the year. White crossed 2nd ahead of Jared Gilson, Damien Bechler and David Rasmussen. Bechler’s 4th place effort was plenty good, to grab the track title for 2024.
Champions are now crowned and it is on to the Showdown in September featuring the Super DIRTCar Series, DIRTCar Sportsman Championship Tour and a Crate Late Model Special Friday night. Saturday September 7th the Empire Super Sprints return for action along with the 7th edition of the John Burr Memorial for the Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman and the annual Ron White Memorial Open race for the Sundance Leisure Thundercars.
