Cole Stangle Leads A Family 1-2 Finish In Modified Feature Saturday At Bridgeport Motorsports Park

Story By: BRIDGEPORT MOTORSPORTS PARK – SWEDESBORO, NJ – Janney Electric sponsored the four division show at the Bridgeport Motorsports Park on Saturday night and the racing was electrifying as every division offered great racing on the High Banks.
The Danny’s Pizza Pizzazz Modifieds ended up being the battle of the cousins as seventeen year old, Cole Stangle raced cousin, Matt to the finish line to win his first ever in Modified competition and to become the fourteenth different winner in this division this season.
Jim Gallagher, Jr. and Sammy Martz, Jr. led the field to the green with Gallagher jumping out in front on the start. Matt Stangle had moved up to third before the caution waved for a chain reaction incident in turn four that forced both Roger Manning and Billy Pauch, Jr. to make trips to the pits before returning to the restart at the rear of the field.
On the restart, Matt Stangle won the battle for the lead. Stangle drove away from the field as Gallagher raced several car lengths ahead of the battle for third between Cole Stangle and Martz, Jr. who was followed Billy Osmun III.
As the first half of the race progressed, Matt Stangle’s lead grew. He would be exiting turn two before the field entered turn one. Then it was nearly a straightaway lead that Stangle had over Gallagher, Cole Stangle, Martz and Osmun at the crossed flags.
Cole Stangle and the No. 20c began to close on Gallagher and Martz was feeling the pressure of Osmun and Ryan Krachun behind him. On lap nineteen, Cole Stangle went to the outside of Gallagher and grabbed the lead upon exiting turn two.
One lap later, Matt Stangle caught the back of the field.
With five to go, it was evident that Cole Stangle was closing in on the leader. But would he have time? Matt Stangle’s lead had been six seconds. By lap twenty-six, it was the Stangle family race for the lead as slide jobs and cross-overs with Matt out in front.
It came down to the final lap. The two cars exited turn four and it was a drag race to the checkered with Cole Stangle on the inside and in the lead as the pair crossed the finish line side-by-side.
Jim Gallagher, Jr. finished third followed by Sammy Martz, Jr. and Billy Osmun. Ryan Krachun finished sixth followed by Neal Williams, David Hunt, Sam Martz, Sr. and last week’s winner, Dillon Steuer.
Cole Stangle talked about his battle with Martz, a long-time friend, and how they raced side by side, lap after lap without ever touching. The feature winner praised his father for the hard work and dedication that made it all possible and for the addition of Fast Four Shocks to their racing program.
The DCB’s Plumbing and Heating Mid Atlantic Sprint Series (MASS) put on another great feature event which saw Dave Brown become the first repeat winner in MASS competition with his win his second win of the season overall.
Larry McVay and Jared Kreider led the field to the start of the twenty-five lap feature event with McVay taking the early lead.
There was plenty of three wide action behind McVay and Kreider as Dave Brown, Eddie Wagner and Buddy Schweibinz battled for position with Troy Betts and Kevin Nagy quickly racing into this mix.
The leaders had caught the back of the field by lap ten. Kreider made a great move for the lead, choosing the right line around the lapped cars while McVay battled for a clear track. Kreider’s success was short-lived as he made hard contact in turns three and four and brought out the caution.
McVay was back out in front on the restart with Brown, Schweibinz, Wagner and Betts trailing. Betts took over third on lap thirteen and then challenged Brown for second. Brown held down second in spite of the three car battle with Betts and Schweibinz.
Several single car cautions marked the final laps and the single file restarts made for some exciting racing. Brown challenged for the lead on lap twenty-four and took the white flag as the race leader. Brown raced to the checkered over McVay, Nagy, Schweibinz and Betts. Tim Iulg raced from 18th to finish sixth followed by Wagner, Jon Brennfleck, Rick Stief and Tim Tanner.
Jim Wyers was the early race leader in the Ice Less 602 Sportsman. A lap five restart saw a three car duel for the lead with Wyers, Jax Yohn and Travis Hill. Hill had just taken the lead when the caution waved, negating his efforts. Hill made it stick when he grabbed the lead again on a lap nine restart.
After being involved in an earlier caution, Brian Papiez raced his way into the top five. The final laps saw the battle for the lead centered around Hill, Papiez and Yohn with Hill taking the win – his second of the 2024 season. This win fell on the birthday of Bill Hill – Travis and Jesse’s father who lost his battle to cancer in December of 2012.
Papiez finished second followed by Yohn, Ethan Bill and Jim Wyers. Billy Chester finished sixth with Ethan Young, Brian Rogers, Michael Beckett and Pete Serra rounding out the top ten.
Mike Hughes raced to the win in the Janney Electric Street Stocks for his fifth win of the season and second with Crate power under the hood. Hughes was able to pull away from the field and the heated battle for second. Jeff Dirkes was the winner of that battle after Nick Sandone III was sidelined with an electrical issue. Gary Bozowski finished third followed by Spider Ensinger III and Terry Chaney.
