Column By: NICK GRAZIANO / SUPER DIRTCAR SERIES – WEEDSPORT, NY – The Super DIRTcar Series will hit high gear in September as Super DIRT Week 52 looms with a tripleheader weekend to kick off the month.
First, the Series will return to Canada to run the postponed Canadian Classic at Brockville Ontario Speedway on Thursday, Sept. 5. Then, The Beasts of The Northeast will make the short drive south for their first appearance at Can-Am Speedway in two years for the R.D. Hutchinson Memorial on Friday, Sept. 6. That all leads to the Cavalcade Weekend at Weedsport Speedway on Saturday, Sept. 7, with the victor taking home $10,000 and a Super DIRT Week guaranteed starting spot.
Brockville Ontario Speedway brings the Series back to Canada for the second time this year to try and repeat last year’s barnburner from the 3/8-mile track, which saw Hall of Famer Tim Fuller walk away with the win.
When the Big Block Modified stars roll into Can-Am Speedway, they’ll race on the track’s new 3/8-mile configuration for the first time with the Series. Before the change, Matt Sheppard was the last driver to win a Super DIRTcar Series race on its 4/10-mile version.
The weekend will wrap up with the Series’ third and final trip to Weedsport Speedway this year. Can they make it three different winners in three events? Mat Williamson won the first race in May and then Stewart Friesen won the Hall of Fame 100 in July, picking up the first guaranteed starting spot in the Billy Whittaker Cars 200 (Saturday, Oct. 12).
Currently, Friesen, Jimmy Phelps and Sheppard are the only three drivers that have earned a guaranteed starting spot.
