Story By: DAN KAPUSCINSKI / WEEDSPORT SPEEDWAY – WEEDSPORT, NY – The 10th edition of the prestigious Sportsman Classic 75, presented by Stirling Lubricants, will take place on Saturday, September 7 as part of Cavalcade Cup Weekend at Weedsport Speedway.
Running as part of the DIRTcar Sportsman Championship Series schedule, the Sportsman Classic 75 will again pay a lucrative $2,500 to the winner.
“We’re proud to keep this event as part of the Weedsport schedule,” said Weedsport Speedway promoter, Jimmy Phelps. “This race started as part of Al Heinke’s vision to highlight the up and coming racers in our sport and it has proven to be a race that can catapult a Sportsman driver into the Modified scene.”
Previous champions include James Michael Friesen, Dave Marcuccilli, Ronnie Davis III, Jackson Gill, Zachary Payne, Cody McPherson and most recently, Richard Murtaugh III.
Murtaugh triumphed in last year’s running with a dramatic last lap pass of Emmett Waldon, winning by a mere .011-seconds. McPherson would take third place in 2023 and all three figure to be prime contenders once again come next weekend.
McPherson currently leads the DIRTcar Sportsman Championship Series standings as of August 28 with one victory in three starts, while Waldon sits third. In between is Gavin Eisele, winner of the first two series events in 2024.
The top runners will contend with the rest of the series standouts on September 7 including Zach Sobotka, Nick Root, Adam Leslie, Mike Fowler, Jessica Power, Savannah Laflair, Ryan Barrett, Tyler Stevenson, Cody Manitta and more.
Fans who pre-purchase tickets to the upcoming Stirling Lubricants Cavalcade Cup Weekend at Weedsport Speedway on September 7-8, will automatically enter into a chance to win a pair of Saturday tickets to Super DIRT Week at Oswego Speedway.
To be eligible, fans must pre-purchase their Cavalcade Cup Weekend tickets by no later than 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, September 1. Tickets can be pre-purchased via the Tickets tab at www.weedsportspeedway.com. Those who pre-purchase tickets will also save $5.
Two winners will be drawn on Monday, September 2 and posted to the speedway’s Facebook page. One set of tickets to Super DIRT Week will go to a fan with a Saturday ticket to Cavalcade Cup Weekend and another set of tickets will go to a fan with a Cavalcade Cup Weekend Sunday ticket.
A full weekend of action during Stirling Lubricants Cavalcade Cup Weekend on September 7-8 will see the Super DIRTcar Series in action with the DIRTcar Sportsman Series Sportsman Classic 75 and the CRSA Sprint Cars on September 7.
The DIRTcar Big Blocks will contend on September 8 with the return of the ESS Sprint Cars and the Empire Street Stock Series.
