Column By: MIKE TRAVERSE / RPW – WEST LEBANON, NY – With next week’s Mr. Dirt race counting only show up points, it was a race for the Modified Championship at Lebanon Valley Speedway on Saturday night.
It was such a tight battle between Andy Bachetti and Brett Haas that a couple of positions could make the difference.
That’s what it boiled down to as the lap counter clicked off, Bachetti and Haas were battling for every position they could get. And it turned out that Bachetti’s last lap pass of race long leader Eddie Marshall won himself the Modified feature and the championship.
“Hat’s off to Brett Haas and his whole team, they stayed with us all year and it came right down to the end of the line,” Bachetti said. “I had a decent car, but I had some help from upstairs. And 2024, here we are.”
Marshall had led from the pole and sprinted out to a healthy lead when the only caution flag of the race flew on lap 7. Marshall again pulled out to the lead as both Bachetti and Haas attempted to gain positions.
With 10 to go, Bachetti was 5th as he had the strong running cars of John Virgilio, Chris Curtis and Matt Pupello ahead of him. But Bachetti was able to move past that trio and closed in on Marshall.
The final lap saw Bachetti make the pass on Marshall as Eddie tried to regain the spot down low. But at the finish, it was Andy getting his 68th career Lebanon Valley win and 4th this year. Marshall finished 2nd and Curtis 3rd.
Haas, with his 4th place finish, came up a spot short in his championship bid. Virgilio was 5th.
Completing the top 10 were Pupello 6th, JR Heffner 7th, Alex Yankowski 8th, Kolby Schroeder 9th and Kyle Armstrong 10th.
“I was told that I had to win the race in order to get this job done. I did what I had to do,” Bachetti said. Hats off to my whole team for working their tails off all summer.”
And for the 2nd week in a row and the 3rd time this season, Bachetti was able to accomplish the sweep as he won the
358 Small Block Modified feature. It was Bachetti’s 10th 358 win of the season.
“We have two more races left including Mr. Dirt, so we hope to carry this momentum into that,” Andy said.
Bachetti got the lead from early leader Pete Carlotto and raced off to a big advantage. The race seemed stable until a caution with 4 laps to go when caution flew. Jerry Coppola and Kyle Sheldon were able to move past Carlotto and though Coppola kept it close, Bachetti still had enough to grab the win.
Following Coppola and Sheldon was Carlotto in 4th and Jason Harrington 5th.
Guy Sheldon, subbing for Lorne Browe, was 6th, Jeff Watson 7th, Brian Peterson 8th, Ryan Larkin 9th and Michael Trauschold 10th.
“It’s not easy, the guys work real hard in the shop. Just gotta drive hard and keep beating them,” Bachetti concluded.
For the Sportsman, it was the Rod Fifield Memorial and Matt Burke was able to end Tim Hartman Jr’s long winning streak.
“The car felt good. I certainly could have done without those restarts and the extra laps. The car was really solid under me all night and I could run my line. We resisted making changes after the heat and went with what we got,” Burke said.
Dylan Grogan make a late race bid for the lead, but finished 2nd. Brady Cordova was 3rd, Hartman Jr. 4th and Mike ranold 5th.
Michael Sabia was 6th, Nick Giardini 7th, Craig Wholey 8th, Chris Crane Jr. 9th and Alex Bell 10th.
The DIRTCar Pro Stock Series made a stop at Lebanon valley Speedway on Saturday for the Old Buzzard 30, run in memory of Jim Langenback. And Frank Twing, one of those who would compete against Jim, came away with a well earned win.
“The car felt great. The cautions were agonizing. I took a gamble with some changes. I was fastest in the group and won the heat and then the feature. It doesn’t get any better than that,” Twing said.
After getting the lead early from Luke Horning, it was a 3 car battle with Twing, Chris Stalker and Zach Sorrentino. All three ran nose to tail for a good portion of the race, but try as they may, Stalker and Sorrentino were unable to pass Twing.
Following Stalker in 2nd and Sorrentino in 3rd were Jason Casey 4th and Rich Crane 5th. Rounding out the top 10 were Pete Stefanski 6th, Philip DiFigilo 7th, Devon Camenga 8th, Slater baker 9th and Jocelyn Roy 10th.
In the Limited Sportsman, long time racer John Santolin had the lead, lost it and then regained it and pulled away to take the win. Colby Kokosa was 2nd, Scott Zehnacker 3rd, Harold Robitaillie 4th and Chris Humes 5th.
David Streibel Jr. was the Super Street feature winner with Dave Streibel Sr. 2nd, Lou Gancarz 3rd, Kerianne Vandenburg 4th and Peter Huntoon 5th.
Jonathan Shepherd was the 4 Cylinder Dual Cam winner with Dawson Thompson taking the Single Cam honors.
Be sure to check out the action next Saturday, August 31st as it’s the huge Mr. Dirt Track USA DIRTcar Series event worth $15,500 to the winner.
