Column By: MIKE TRAVERSE / RPW – ACCORD, NY – It had been a long time since Michael Storms last won a Modified feature at Accord Speedway.

Five years to be exact.

However, that wait ended on Friday night as he put on a dominating drive to take his fifth career win at the track and his first since 2019.

“This is a big win for us, we’ve been struggling all year,” Storms said in Victory Lane.

Behind the wheel of the Gary Miller owned #28, Storms started 3rd and took the lead early from Jared Miller. From that point, the rest of the field was racing for position as the outcome for the lead was never in doubt.

Numerous cautions had Race Director, Dave Rocket, call for a single file restart and it was a decision that Storms was good with.

“Dave went single file there, which I felt was smart. It gets a little hectic out there with the lapped cars. But the track was good. I love this place, it’s fun as hell,” Storms said.

Storms was able to distance himself on all the restarts and his winning margin was 3 seconds. Joe Judge with a good run finished 2nd. Bobby Hackel IV made his appearance at Accord on Friday worthwhile as he finished 3rd.

Modified points leader Danny Tyler helped his cause by finishing 4th, ahead of his contenders for the title. Scott Ferrier was 5th.

Completing the top 10 were Cody Higbie in 6th, Hunter Lapp 7th, Dominic Roselli 8th Jr. 8th, Randy Green 9th and Justin Holland 10th.

“Gary Miller puts a lot of money into this and he’s had zero results, so this feels really good,” Storms concluded.

Jared LaBagh was the car to beat in the Sportsman division as he raced to a 4.7 second win over Jackie Brown Jr.

After Eddie Owns had the early lead, Brayden Traver got the lead and the rookie driver was looking smooth as he continued his move up from the Slingshots. A lap 10 restart saw LaBagh work the outside of Traver and he made the pass and drove off for the win.

Brown made some late passes to record his runner-up finish. Whitey Slavin was 3rd, Kevin Stevens 4th and Traver 5th. Rounding out the top 10 Nick Plumstead 6th, Owens 7th, Mike Travis 8th, Joe Judge 9th and Ryan Behrent 10th.

Gary Ronk took the lead on lap 3 and went on to win Friday’s Pure Stock feature. Bill Deak Jr. was able to keep it close and finished 2nd. Jayden Sleight finished 3rd, Walt Henry 4th and Shawn Williams 5th.

The Accord Speedway Vintage Modifieds were in action on Friday with Larry Ricci Flashback, Adam Douglass Mystique, John Roese Late Model and Jim Hyde Antique the division winners.

AJ Albreada returned to Accord Speedway on Friday and he was back in the All Star Slingshots Victory Lane. Breanna Reynolds was 2nd and Sophia Spear 3rd. Brayden Marks was the Junior Slingshot winner.

Tim DeGrote was Friday’s 4 Cylinder winner over Brandon Conklin, Jeff Degroat and George Barringer.

The NEWS Sprint cars will be joining the other regular divisions on Friday, August 23rd when racing returns to Accord Speedway.
