Story By: KENNY SHUPP / OUTLAW SPEEDWAY – DUNDEE, NY – Friday, August 30, 2024, found Outlaw Speedway owner/promoter, Tyler Siri pull the curtain on his 9th consecutive Double Point Championship Night at the popular Yates County Speedway, and it turned out to be a drama filled event with a fresh new face in victory lane and several new Track Champions.
In the Friendly Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram Modified thirty lap feature, Stacy Jackson and Billy Paine would bring the field to the opening green with Jackson taking command off the start piloting one of Tyler Siri’s potent house cars.
Lap after lap Jackson would stay out in front with all eyes on a pair of young guns in Alex Payne of Hopewell, NY and AJ Potrzebowski of Elmira as the pair would settle who would be crowned the 2024 Modified Track Champion.
Potrzebowski lined up tenth on the opening grid with Payne right behind in row six. A third player in Jeff Daugherty, who still had a chance at the title suffered through mechanical issues and was never really a factor in the entire event.
Kreg Crooker, who continues to have a Cinderella season since joining up with a new team ran second for most of the event before the fourth place starting Tommy Collins stormed by to take over the runner-up slot, buy Jackson was just too strong at the front as he cruised to his first feature win at Outlaw in a Modified in several years holding off Collins by a slim margin of less than a second in the green to checkered feature.
Try as he might, Potrzebowski, who came into the night leading all contenders with four feature wins had to settle for the third and final podium finishing spot.
Crooker raced within the lead pack throughout the entire distance drifted to fourth after running second with Bossman, Tyler Siri rounding the top five after beginning the event in that position.
Payne was able to keep Potrzebowski within eyesight throughout the entire distance in nailing sixth and that is all it would take for the third-generation pilot to claim his first ever Outlaw Speedway Modified Track Championship over Potrzebowski, Bobby Varin, Danny Johnson and Tommy Collins Jr.
The point difference between Carter Crooker and Daryl Krebs was just a couple of markers when the Sunrise Insulation/Knapp and Schlappi Lumber Crate Sportsman Division took to the Fast 4/10 of a Mile oval for their twenty-five-lap feature.
After a dismal last three outings, Crooker found himself lining up on the pole position with Krebs buried in the ninth starting spot.
Veteran driver, Dale Welty would join Crooker on the front row as they would bring the nineteen-car field to green with Crooker getting the jump and lead throughout the entire distance.
Only one yellow flag on lap twelve would slow the pace as Krebs had already driven through traffic and was now up to second and charging.
Defending class champion Chris Fisher was another player in the point battle fight as he started eighth and by halfway was up to third and tracking down the lead duo of Carter Crooker and Daryl Krebs.
However, fourth generation pilot, Carter Crooker was just too much to manage on this night as he went on to win by a comfortable three plus second margin over Krebs and Fisher as the Campbell, NY teenager would go on to pick-up the win and the $2,000, 2024 Track Championship.
Krebs and Fisher would complete the podium with July 19 feature winner, Ben Feldman coming home fourth.
Brent Ayers would drive through the stacked field from fifteenth to round out the top five at the finish.
Crooker led the way in class feature wins with four and would win the title by just five points over Krebs who was without a feature win all season.
Fisher, Ayers and Feldman would complete the top five in Crate Sportsman 2024 points.
In Swarthout Recycling Street Stock twenty- lap feature action Damon Decker has had a career season piloting the George Miller owned creation coming into the Double Point Night leading all players with three feature wins, one more than Gene Sharpsteen who was setting atop the point battle heading into the finale.
Joe Giardina would bring the field to green from his pole position and lead the first trio of laps before the first and only caution flag would wave in the twenty-lap affair.
On the restart, Decker wasted no time disposing of Giardina and assumed control on lap four and from there went on to pick-up win four on the season.
However, by virtue of his second-place finish, Gene Sharpsteen would be crowned the 2024 Track Champion and he did it on a year of consistency of just two wins, but only one occasion did he finish outside the top three in feature finishes all season and that is how you win a track title.
Nailing third at the completion was Williamsport, Pa speedster, Dylan Cecce who entered the event with one lone feature win on August 16.
Completing the top five was Giardina in fourth after leading early while Chris Woodard would go on to complete the top five after starting the event in the last row.
For Sharpsteen it was his first Outlaw Speedway Street Stock $2,000 Track title as he was able to hold off Decker by a mere twelve points.
Giardina, Jared Gill and Carl Cleveland would go on to complete the top five-point finishers.
Jeredd Dennis makes the one hour plus tow each week from his Addison, NY shop to compete in the NAPA Hobby Stock Division at the Outlaw Speedway and for the second-generation driver it marked his first full season of competition at the Outlaw Speedway after sporadic appearances over the past several years primarily in early or late season action.
Dennis was in control of his own destiny heading into the Double Point Season Finale leading the points by the slimmest margin over the likes of Justin Eldredge, Doug Batterson and many time Outlaw Speedway Hobby Stock Track Champion, Marc Minutolo.
Minutolo would begin the twenty lap A Main outside the front row and immediately get the jump over Jesse Balance and from there go on to claim his fourth feature win at Outlaw in 2024.
Dennis would begin the feature right behind Minutolo and follow Phelps, NY speedster throughout the entire distance to claim second and that was just enough to take the $2,000 point champions check back to Addison.
Doug Batterson who entered the feature with three feature wins would start the event in the sixth slot and go on to claim third.
Willy Easling would go on to claim fourth after having won a pair of feature events during the season on May 31and July 5.
Justin Eldredge dropped one position from his original starting spot to complete the top five.
Only a pair of caution flags would slow the pace coming on laps four and six.
For Jeredd Dennis his first ever Outlaw Speedway Hobby Stock Track Title came with just one lone trip to victory lane on June 14, but it was his consistency throughout the entire season that would find him claiming the title over Minutolo who had to settle for second place in the point battle just twelve markers back.
Doug Batterson, Justin Eldredge and Willy Easling would go on to complete the top five in NAPA Hobby Stock final points.
On a night that produced very few caution flags in the first four feature events, the Winner’s Circle Deli 4 Cylinder Mini Stocks took to the speedway for their twenty -lap feature and that would all change as yellow fever was the name of the game right off the drop of the opening green flag.
No less than seven yellow flag slowdowns would keep the field bunched up and the pace slowed with all eyes on a three-horse race for the Track Championship between Jason Smart, Willy Easling and Mike Stone with both Stone and Smart previous class champions.
Like he had done six times previously entering the night, Easling was looking for win seven and the hopes of his first ever track title.
2023 Mini Stock Track Champion, Corky Grant would lead the opening pair of circuits before giving way to the high-flying Easling who blasted through the field from the tenth starting spot to take command on lap three.
From there the Beaver Dams, NY teenager would have to withstand a barrage of caution flags in route to win seven.
Jayson Smart had entered the night with just a few points in front with Stone trailing in third and when the double checkered flags waved on the twenty-lap event, Easling had picked up the “W” over Jason Smart, Corky Grant, Kevin Ryce and Mike Stone who completed the top five.
With computers and scorers working overtime it was determined there was a tie at the top in the decisive point tally between Easling and Smart with the tie breaker going to Willy Easling who had seven overall feature wins as compared to two trips to victory lane by Jason Smart.
For Easling it was his first ever Winner’s Circle Deli Mini Stock Track Championship as he walked off with the $2,000 winner’s check for his efforts.
A disappointed Smart had to settle for second place in the coveted point battle with The Nature Boy, Mike Stone trailing in third place.
Connor Eric and Lee Fritz would complete the top five in the final point tally.
Last but certainly not least the Fritz Masonry Youth Bandits would see their point battle decided with second generation Elmira, NY high school student, Zach Daugherty leading the points with four feature wins entering the night.
In the five cars, ten lap feature, Daugherty was on his game once again in leading all challengers in claiming the win and the track title.
With the victory it made five straight trips to the Outlaw Speedway Victory Lane after finishing third on opening night to point runner-up Parker Cunningham who also was credited with second place on the night.
Third went to Connor Crane with Kassitie Clugstone and Danica Hall completing the field.
Trailing Daugherty and Cummingham in the ultimate point tally was Danica Hall, Kassitie Clugstone, Connor Crane and Aiden Gardner.
Congratulations to all competitors.
With the 2024 Point Standings now safely tucked into the record books, track owner/promoter, Tyler Siri will see his Outlaw Speedway lay dormant on Friday, September 6 as the track prepares for a pair of events on September 13 and 20 prior to pulling the curtain on the season with the 9th Annual Dutch Hoag Memorial on October 18-19.
