Story By: TIM BALTZ / BROCKVILLE ONTARIO SPEEDWAY – BROCKVILLE, ONT – The second attempt at the Canadian Classic at the Brockville Ontario Speedway proved successful Thursday night.
The Super DIRTCar Series put on an incredible show on this night. The DIRTCar Sportsman, Northeast Late Model Alliance and Mini Stocks also provided some exciting action all evening long.
Jimmy Phelps came into the evening with a pair of runner up finishes in Super DIRTCar Series events at The BOS in 2008 and 2017 and would use his pole starting spot to grab he lead over Matt Caprara, Anthony Perrego, Alex Payne and defending race winner Tim Fuller. Phelps was running strong on the bottom lane but Payne was hounding the leader in the opening laps. On lap 17 a pair of former winners Danny Johnson and Tim Fuller tangled off turn four bringing out the yellow. Both drivers were done for the night. This restart gave Payne the run he wanted as he charged to the lead with Phelps back to second and Anthony Perrego in third. Behind them Matt Sheppard was on the move from 15th. He broke into the top 5 at the halfway point, but Alex Payne was dominating as he held over a straightaway lead with no sign of any drivers ready to make a challenge. That’s when Anthony Perrego started to go forward as he closed in on the leader, but that would all change on lap 49. On the front straight away track champion Ryan Arbuthnot tagged the wall sending his car into a violent flip, bringing out the red flag. Arbuthnot would climb out uninjured but the car was destroyed. When the green flew Payne and Perrego continued their battle while Sheppard closed in a well. The 2019 Canadian Classic winner took the 2nd spot and closed in on the race leader. After a great battle the night changed for Sheppard as he slipped off the top of turns three and four, dropping to the fourth spot, which allowed Payne to get away. This proved to be the break Alex Payne needed as the Hopewell New York driver would lead the final 9 laps to score his first ever Super DIRTCar Series win. Anthony Perrego crossed in second with Matt Sheppard rebounding for third. Tim Sears Jr. crossed in 4th and Jimmy Phelps completed the top 5.
Now four time track champion Bobby Herrington would take the lead from his pole starting spot in the 25 lap DIRTCar Sportsman feature over Gavin Eisele and Brennan Moore. The top three put on a great battle for the lead with Herrington eventually pulling away to a comfortable lead leaving Eisele and Moore to battle for the runner up spot. Several mid race cautions slowed the event for minor spins, but Herrington was not phased and would keep the lead each time, despite several challenges from Eisele on the outside lane. The bottom lane proved to be the fastest way, which meant everyone wanted to be there. Shane Stearns and Brennan Moore had an intense battle for the third spot as the laps wound down. Moore would keep the position, but Stearns would get turned into the infield off turn four on lap 22 bringing out the yellow flag. When the green flew Herrington once again pulled away and would take the white flag and was well on his way to another win. The caution would fly for a three car tangle in turns 1 and 2, setting up a one lap dash to the checkers. On the final restart Bobby Herrington was not to be denied as he marched on to his 5th win of the year at Brockville. Gavin Eisele, Brennan Moore, Dylan Kirkland and Matt Barbour completed the top 5 finishers.
It was a tough start for the 25 lap Mini stock feature as drivers slid off turn one on the initial start, resulting in a flip by Brighton Speedway regular Tommy Bailey and the red flag flew. Bailey was uninjured and the race was reset for a complete restart. When the green flew it was veteran Adam Turner, driving the Brandon MacMillan owned ride, taking the lead with track champion Matt Boal and Jamie Larocque right there with him. Several cautions slowed the event on multiple occasions, but Turner remained up front and in control on this night. Jamie Larocque challenged Turner several times as they put on a great battle for the race lead with Max Steele moving to third. On lap 23 the final yellow flew as Emily Massey tagged Max Steele sending him spinning as the two drivers battled for third. Massey was sent to the rear for the contact. On the final restart Turner was able to jump out in front and despite several challenges from Jamie Larocque, Turner would drive on to score his first ever Mini Stock win at Brockville. The win was significant as he broke his own record, having now won in six different divisions at the speedway, a feat unmatched in track history. Jamie Larocque, Dakota Boal, Matt Bond went from 18t to 4th while Travis Fox Connor rounded out the top 5.
The Northeast Late Model Alliance would close out the Canadian Classic with a 25 lap event and Modified star Brian McDonald would grab the lead early with David Pangrazio and Kyle Sopaz chasing him. The man they call “slim” was running strong but Pangrazio, who has plenty of experience in the division, used the inside lane to take over the lead on lap 4 and began to author a dominant performance. Pangrazio was the fastest car on track but lapped cars became a factor which allowed McDonald to close in and make a race out of it. On lap 17 the yellow flew for the first time for Rich Sanders who slowed on the backstretch. When the green flew Pangrazio opened up a commanding lead with McDonald and Sopaz running second and third. Over the final laps David Pangrazio put his car on auto pilot as he marched on to his first ever Brockville win. Brian McDonald held on for second with Kyle Sopaz, Charlie Sandercock and Nathan Rinaldi completing the top 5.
With the regular season done it is time for the annual Monster Enduro coming up on Sunday September 15th.
