Story By: BRENT OTCHERE / OHSWEKEN SPEEDWAY – OHSWEKEN, ONT – Nitro 54 Variety, Arrow Express, and Sit’n Bull Tire presented the third running of the Northern Crate Nationals at Ohsweken Speedway on Friday; Brent Begolo took the $7,000 A-Main win for the Crate Sprint Cars, while Nick Sheridan, Joe Trenca, Dave Bailey, and Jason Tolton also took wins in their respective divisions.
Northern Crate Nationals Crate Sprint Cars
Brett Stratford earned the pole position with Keegan Baker next to him on the front row for the 35 lap Northern Crate Nationals A-Main. Stratford quickly put a two second lead over the field until a succession of early caution flags fell. Stratford led once again after the restart but Matt Billings had charged forward from 14th and began to track the 2024 Ohsweken champion down, eventually overtaking for the lead on lap 11.
Brent Begolo methodically picked his way through the field after starting in row four, and the rookie Sprint Car driver was not content to stay in the runner-up spot. Traffic became a factor in the closing laps and Begolo capitalized on the situation, catching Billings to pass for the lead in heavy traffic. Begolo never looked back and went on to become the Northern Crate Nationals champion. Next to cross the line were Billings in second, Stratford in third, Lee Ladouceur fourth, and Jesse Costa fifth.
360 Sprint Car NSCN Twin 15’s
Nick Sheridan and Jason Barney brought the field to the green flag for the first of the Twin 15’s for the 360 Sprint Cars. Sheridan had a clean start and put a gap over the field. A battle for third ensued between Mike Bowman and Dylan Westbrook, providing entertainment while these two local titans race hard and clean. Sheridan had his eyes set on the win as he led every lap of the race and picked up his first 360 Sprint Car victory at the track. New York driver Barney finished in second, with Bowman in third for the final podium spot. The rest of the top five were Washington speedster J.J. Hickle and 2024 Ohsweken champ Dylan Westbrook.
The second of the Twin 15’s had Pennsylania’s Jordan Thomas and Ohsweken track record holder Shone Evans on the front row. Josh Hansen slowed on the track with a mechanical failure and brought out the caution flag on lap five. The restart led to another caution as Tyler Rand crashed on the front stretch. Joe Trenca took advantage of the restart and took the lead; the driver from New York was able to hold off the challengers and take his first Ohsweken win. Next to finish were Ohioan Max Stambaugh in second, Thomas third, Evans fourth, and Quebec’s Jordan Poirier fifth.
Middleport Mechanical Thunder Stocks
Mike Klazinga started on pole alongside Jim Lampman to take the green flag for the 20 lap Thunder Stock A-Main. Dave Bailey got into the lead on the first lap after starting third on the grid. Bailey had to defend his lead after a caution came out on lap 10 which brought Ryan Beagle closer to him.
By lap 17 Beagle could be found right on Bailey’s bumper for the lead, but he couldn’t find a way around for the lead. Bailey took a well-deserved win after leading every lap and holding off the 2024 track champion and Thunder Stock Nationals winner. Beagle had to settle for second place, with Brock Gregory in third, Trevor DeBoer fourth, and Lampman fifth.
HRW Automotive Mini Stocks
The front row of the grid featured Alex Riley and Gillian Hils to begin the 15 lap Mini Stock A-Main. Hils rocketed ahead of the field, albeit short lived as a red flag came out due to a three car pileup on the backstretch and resulted in Mason Anderson’s car barrel rolling violently. All drivers were unharmed, but Anderson’s car was heavily damaged. Hils held the lead when racing resumed until a caution flag came out on lap six.
Hils commanded the restart with a hard-charging Jason Tolton gaining quickly. Lap 13 saw Tolton take the lead away from Hils with a daring pass. The last few laps were nail biters as Tolton and Hils were on top of each other swapping for the lead. Tolton ultimately came out victorious taking the lead in the final corner and going on to win the final feature of the season. Hils came in a close second, while rounding out the top 5 were Riley in third, Dusty DeBoer fourth, and Jeremy Cooper fifth.
