Story By: KASEY KREIDER / LINDA’S SPEEDWAY – JONESTOWN, PA – For the driver that many consider “the GOAT” of Slingshot racing, it was hard to script a better ending to his Living Legends Night than what ended up happening at the Linda’s Speedway on Friday night.
“The Jet” Brett Bieber was honored as the newest member of the exclusive club of Living Legends at the famed quarter-mile just prior to the evening’s Hoffer Paving All Star Slingshot A-Main. When feature time rolled around, Bieber’s No. 32 found the front in a hurry, and held off Tyler Ulsh in a thrilling, photo finish to claim a storybook victory.
Bieber quickly zipped to the top spot from the outside pole in the main event, and seemed to have things under control during the race’s first half. A restart with nine laps to go made things interesting, though, as Ulsh began to mount a challenge in search of his first Linda’s win of the year.
As the leaders rocketed off turn 2 for the final time, Ulsh got a nose outside of Bieber and drag raced the Oley driver’s mount down the backstretch. With both competitors dead even entering turn 3, the stage was set for yet another Slingshot photo finish in 2024. Bieber leaned on Ulsh ever so slightly coming off of turn 4, and that may have been the difference, as Bieber crossed the line just 0.025 seconds in front of the No. 1 machine. With his triumph, Bieber joined Mike Dicely as the only drivers to ever win on their own Living Legends Night at the Linda’s Speedway.
Bieber’s win – his second of the year at Linda’s – kept the point battle between himself and Chase Schott ultra tight. Schott’s lead over Bieber now sits at only three points.
In a season of exciting 270 racing, Friday night’s Mt. Gretna Roller Rink 270 Micro Sprint A-Main may have been the best one yet. The 25-lapper featured – at one point – an epic four-car battle for the win between Brayden Spencer, Pat Kelly, and championship contenders Mike Boyer and Brandon Heist. The quartet of competitors put on a thrilling display of driving while battling amongst lapped traffic, but an incident in front of the leaders with five laps to go collected Kelly’s machine, and took the New York native out of the race.
Heist restarted in the third spot, but used a high-to-low move to get inside of Mike Boyer entering turn 1 with two circuits remaining. The defending champion then put his title challenger from last season in the crosshairs, and pulled off an outside pass in the final corner to secure his third Winged 270 win of the season, narrowing Boyer’s point lead to just one marker in the process.
Although he fell short of a win in the Hoffer Paving All Star Slingshots, Lebanon’s Chase Schott left no doubt whatsoever in Friday night’s Stolz Stove Sales Winged 600 Micro Sprint feature. “The Wild Child” led wire-to-wire and bagged his second win of the year by well over two seconds at the finish line.
Point leader Brent Shearer suffered a mechanical woe on his No. 29, knocking him out of the feature and narrowing his lead to 14 over Brian Kramer and 26 over Schott with two races left.
The Front Wheel Drive division was the nightcap on Friday, and it was Bernville’s Ken Buck taking his second win of the year in the class. Buck lost the lead to Larry Eck early in the race, but a flat left-front tire on the No. 39 with four laps to go put Buck’s Scirocco back out into the clean air. Buck held off a furious challenge over the closing laps from Dave Eitnier to take the win.
Thanks to some misfortune for Bill Sherwood and Shane Flaherty, Buck was able to claim the points lead and stretch it out to 12 entering the Front Wheel Drive season finale on Sept. 27.
Linda’s Speedway returns to action with a jam-packed, six-division show next Friday, Sept. 6. The Tommy B Open 4 Cylinder Race headlines the action for the stock cars, while the 600 Micro Sprints will compete in a Winged and Wingless doubleheader. Also on deck for next Friday are the J&J Auto Body Junior Slingshots, the Junior Sprints, and the final race of the season for the Midgets.
