Story By: TIM BALTZ / CAN-AM SPEEDWAY – LAFARGEVILLE, NY – Night number one of the Showdown in September was one for the ages Friday night at the Can Am Speedway.
The Super DIRTCar Series honored the Richard Hutchinson with a 67 lap series event plus a wild finish in the DIRTCar Sportsman Series and the return of the Northeast Late Model Alliance.
The night was complete with a 25 lap Northeast Late Model Alliance feature event and Kyle Sopaz charged to the front over David Pangrazio and Brian McDonald.
Sopaz was fast in the early laps as he pulled away with David Pangrazio close behind in the runner up spot. The top two drove away and put on a great show, but the battles were on behind them. On lap 11 Austin King and Brighton Speedway track champion Steve Baldwin would make contact in turn 3 sending King into the wall. King was not hurt but the car was done for the night.
David Pangrazio would once again drive away to a big lead as veteran Dale Caswell began his march to the front, taking second from Kyle Sopaz as he tried his best to run down the leader. Only one more yellow slowed the race on lap 18 for a tangle in turns one and two between Anthony Rinaldi and Ryan Lambert. Both drivers were able to continue on.
On the final restart David Pangrazio would pull away and buildup a straight away lead in the final laps, to score his second win in two days after winning at Brockville Thursday night. Dale Caswell, Kyle Sopaz, Steve Baldwin and Sean Beardsley completed the top five finishers.
Mat Williamson led a strong field of Super DIRTCar Series drivers to the green flag and would lead lap 1 over Felix Roy, Anthony Perrego, Billy Dunn and Tim Sears Jr. The track was fast and Williamson pulled away to a big lead early on but Billy Dunn and Felix Roy would close in making it a three car battle. Track champion Tim Fuller was also on the move as he took second on lap 18 and then ran down Williamson for the lead. On lap 29 Fuller would move in front with Williamson back to second, as he began a dominant run. Over the next 20 laps Tim Fuller drove away leaving Mat Williamson, Billy Dunn, Tim Sears Jr. and Matt Sheppard to battle in the top 5. Fuller looked to have the race well in hand, but that all changed on lap 45. Entering turn 4 Fuller tangled with a lapped car, sending him spinning out in turn four, handing the lead back to Williamson. Fuller would go to the pits to change a left front flat tire, but would rebound for a sixth place finish. On the restart Williamson took over as the dominant driver, pulling away to big lead over Billy Dunn, who was all alone in second, while Sears and Sheppard continued their battle for third and 4th. As the laps clicked off and with no cautions through to the end, Billy Dunn and the others had no chance of catching Mat Williamson, who marched on to score his season leading 7th win of the season and first ever series win at Can Am. Billy Dunn crossed in second with Tim Sears Jr, Matt Sheppard and Anthony Perrego completing the top 5.
The DIRTCar Sportsman Championship Tour was dominated on this night by Richard Murtaugh as he took the lead from the drop of the green flag over Shane Pecore and Taylor Doxtator. Murtaugh started to drive away leaving everyone far behind and was determined to score his 2nd career tour win. Behind the leader Shane Pecore Eric Nier Gavin Eisele and Tyler Corcoran were in a battle for top 5 positions with Corcoran moving to the high lane and eventually took second from Pecore by lap 15, but had a long way to go to catch Murtaugh, who was in front by nearly five seconds. As the laps clicked off Richard Murtaugh put it on auto pilot as Pecore moved to second once again with Eric Nier now into third. Richard Murtaugh’s dominant run would end as the yellow flew on lap 28 for Ryan Barrett who slowed in turn 4 setting up a finish that not many would soon forget. When the green flew Murtaugh and Pecore made slight contact in turns one and two with both sliding up the track, this allowed third place Eric Nier to get by both drivers for the lead as Pecore found his way to second again at the white flag. The top two raced side by side for the win with Pecore jumping in front in turn 3. But Eric Nier rallied back on the bottom and at the line would edge out Shane Pecore for his second win in a row at Can Am and first career tour win. Pecore crossed in second with Tyler Corcoran, Mike Fowler and Richard Murtaugh finishing fifth.
Saturday night the Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman division will have the 7th running of the John Burr Memorial, along with a special Ron White Memorial for the Sundance Leisure Thundercars and the return of the Empire Super Sprints. Racing begins at 7pm.
