Story By: KENNY SHUPP / OUTLAW SPEEDWAY – DUNDEE, NY – With the loss of his father, Ted after a long-fought battle with cancer in 2021, Outlaw Speedway owner/promoter, Tyler Siri made sure there was a night in his memory at the historic Yates County facility.
This year marked the 3rd Annual Ted Siri Memorial which is run in conjunction with NASCAR Night at the track and after coming up short the past two attempts, Tyler Sir was finally able to put all the pieces together in claiming his first ever Ted Siri Memorial as he claimed the thirty-five lap feature event.
After a summer filled with rain, the month of September thus far has seen spectacular conditions and that was the case this past Friday as fans turned out in droves along with a car count of 119 machines representing the five classes of competition.
Thirty-three of the potent Friendly Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram Modifieds signed in for the night with only twenty-five making the cut for the thirty-five laps, $4321.18 to win event.
By the luck of the re-draw, The Doctor of Modified Racing, Danny Johnson, along with Bossman, Tyler Siri brought the field to the opening green with Siri immediately getting the jump and opening a four- car length advantage over Johnson who was under fire from Jordan Siri who was home from Alabama and making a rare start along with Tommy Collins. With Tyler Siri comfortably in control the leaders were in lap traffic within the first ten laps with the stacked field using every inch of the table- top smooth racing surface.
Siri’s potent Teo Pro Car Machine was flawless in lap traffic as he could navigate both the bottom as well as the top of the Fast 4/10 of a Mile Oval.
Lap after lap Sirr continued to set the pace with Johnson still in second and Collins now up to third as the trio was beginning to open daylight on the rest of the field.
The only yellow flag of the thirty-lap grind came on lap twenty-nine for the heavily smoking and slowing machine of Steve Paine.
On the re-start, Siri was now under pressure from The Doctor with Collins glued to his rear bumper and with the caution it brought the Outlaw Speedway 2024 Modified Track Champion, Alex Payne and Tyler Siri teammate and two-time 2024 feature winner, Bobby Varin into the picture.
Payne began the event outside row six with Varin one spot behind inside row seven as the pair methodically worked their way through traffic.
However, with Tyler Siri now in clean air after battling through lap traffic for some twenty laps he was able to hold off any real serious challenges from Johnson and as the leaders flashed under the double checkered flags it was Bossman, Tyler Siri picking up not only his first win of the 2024 campaign, but it was also his first Ted Siri Memorial win as he was greeted by his family and friends in a jubilant victory lane.
Danny Johnson, who picked up his lone feature of 2024 on July 6 and Tommy Collins both put on brilliant drives to claim second and third with Alex Payne and Bobby Varin completing the top five.
Six through tenth went to Will Sheilds who began the event in fourth, Jim LaRock who came from tenth to seventh, Brady Fultz who began eighth and finished in that spot. Jordan Siri back slid during the closing laps after running in the top six most of the event finished ninth with June 14 feature winner, Jeff Daugherty coming from twenty-second to complete the top ten.
The Trevor Zuver led, Jay’s Automotive sponsored ULMS Super Late Model’s made their second and final appearance of 2024 at Outlaw Speedway as the Nationally acclaimed touring group brought a solid twenty-five car field to the $7,500 to win event.
Time Trials set the qualifying heat events as all twenty-five drivers made the 35-lap feature. Big Brother, Dan Stone of Thompson, Pa. along with another Keystone State competitor in Michael Lake of Uniontown led the group to the opening green flag with Stone immediately taking command of the star-studded field.
Drake Troutman of Hyndman, Pa. wasted little time disposing of Lake and put the cross hairs on Stone and the current Lucas Oil LM Rookie of the Year contender was able to work into the lead bringing Waterford, Pa. speedster and sixth place starter Dave Hess Jr. along with him.
Just two yellow flags would slow the pace and bunch up the field with the first coming on lap fifteen for event favorite, Dylan Cecce of Avis as he found his Russ Clark Motorsports owned machine parked in the front straightway wall after contact with another machine.
The second and final caution flag waved on lap twenty-one and from there it was clear sailing as Troutman and Hess were clearly the class of the field at this point.
Mike Knight of Ripley, NY was now up to third after lining up outside row two on the opening grid with Outlaw Speedway Summer Nationals winner, Dylan Yoder up to fourth after being buried mid-pack at the start of the event.
Hess was able to keep up the pressure on Troutman and made the pass in the later stages of the event and once at the point he was able to hold off relentless pressure from Troutman as he would go on to pick-up the win number twenty on the 2024 season showing the versatility of Hess as he competes in both the Crate LM Division along with the Super LM Class across the Northeast.
Troutman did have to settle for a well- deserved runner-up finish as he was chased across the line by Mike Knight as he completed the top three podium finishers.
Dylan Yoder came home fourth falling just shy of backing up his July 26, 2024, win at Outlaw with Michael Lake completing the top five.
Six through tenth went to Dan Stone who like Lake backslid from their front row starting spots none the less good finishes for the pair with Joe Petyak of Gallitzin, Pa. finishing seventh after starting ninth.
Andy Boozle of Clymer claimed eight place, NY with Seth Zacharis of Vestal and Logan Zarin of Hookstown, Pa rounding the top ten finishers.
The USAC Non-Winged 360 Rapid Tire East Coast Sprints made their first ever appearance at the Outlaw Speedway and with eleven machines making the tow with most competitors coming from the Pennsylvania area, it was bright, young talent Briggs Danner of Allentown, Pa. putting a good old fashioned butt whipping on the field and taking home the $4,000 winners spoils.
Danner wasted no time in getting out in front in the twenty-lap affair as he set a blistering pace throughout the entire distance nearly lapping the fourth- place finishing machine of Christian Buono.
Steve Drevicki would go on to finish second nearly a full track behind as he was followed across the line by Fultonville, NY’s Chase Moran with Buono placing fourth with the most hard-fought battle of the event coming from Drevicki, Moran and Buono who you could toss a blanket over at the finish.
Bruce Buckwalter Jr. of Mechanicsburg completed the top five.
Rounding the field was Stoystown, Pa’s Carmen Perigo followed closely by Dale Schweikart of Lindley, Pa.
Mike Haggenbottom of Levittown was next across the line in eighth followed by Brenden Hiles of Langhorne as Shelby Kelly of Runnemede, New Jersey and Middletown, New York’s Gary Huston completed the field.
A full twenty-four car field plus one in the Sunrise Insulation/Knapp and Schlappi Lumber Company 602 Crate Sportsman took to the Fast 4/10 of a Mile Oval for their $2321.18 to win thirty-lap feature with Tim Guild of Addison and Matt Brewer bringing the field to green with both looking for their first win at Outlaw in 2024. Guild who is a weekly regular and Brewer a journeyman would tussle briefly for the top spot before Brewer would assume command and from there and go on to claim the victory by a comfortable two and a half second margin over Scott Torbitt who crossed the line in second. However, Torbitt was later a victim of a post-race disqualification rendering him to last in the finishing order.
Cayden Lawson of Addison, NY lined up in lucky number position thirteen on Friday night the thirteenth of September and put on a masterful drive using yellow flags and some nifty moves to his advantage to claim the runner-up spot with veteran Penn Yan speedster and former Outlaw Speedway Track Champion, Karl Comfort completing the podium after starting ninth.
Fourth went to Tioga, Pa’s Collin Brown won came from eighteenth in a brilliant performance with Beaver Dams youngster, Justice Mayo advancing some sixteen positions from twenty-first to complete the top five after experience problems in his qualifying heat race.
Six through ten were veteran Savona, NY competitor Greg Crooker who came from fifteenth, Adam Taft was seventh advancing from twenty-third.
Eighth place was garnered by Timmy Borden Jr, who dropped one position from his opening seventh place starting position with ninth going to 2024 Point runner-up, Darly Krebs who backslid from sixth.
Rounding the top ten it was Luke Powell who began the thirty lapper in twentieth.
Last but certainly not least the Winner’s Circle Deli 4 Cylinder Mini Stocks were on the card featuring a mixture of both Front and Rear Wheel Drive machines.
Like he had done seven times previously during the 2024 Regular Season at Outlaw Speedway, Willy Easling put on another driving clinic as he would begin the twenty-five lap, $1321.18 to win affair outside row six and blast through the field to make it win eight on the season.
For Easling it was four in a row and eight in the past ten outings as he was once again clearly the class of the field.
Finishing in the runner-up position was third generation driver, Bradly Morseman who brought the field to green from his inside row one starting spot.
Third was claimed by Nate Powers who advanced from seventh at the start with Kenneth Evans and Craig Decamp completing the top five after starting eighth and third, respectively.
Front Wheel Drive specialist, Wesley Houghtaling began the feature in sixth and that is right where he finished as he was chased across the line by The Nature Boy, Mike Stone of Campbell, Chris Bonoffski placed eighth, Mike Dickerson won started outside the front row was ninth while Micheal Morton completed the top ten advancing three spots from thirteenth.
Congratulations to all competitors.
Earlier in the evening and prior to race time, Lucas Oil Late Model and World of Outlaw Late Champion, Tim McCreadie of Watertown was at the track for an autograph session. It was great having the former Modified standout competitor make his way back to Outlaw Speedway where he formerly competed in DIRTcar 358 Modified competition back in 1997 when he was first getting started in the racing business.
Coming up at Outlaw Speedway next week on Friday, September 20 it will be the 9th Annual Cal Lane Memorial Fall Nationals featuring a mixture of the ESS 360 winged sprints along with the Mighty Modifieds, Crate Sportsman, Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks.
