Story By: CHRIS MOORE / UTICA-ROME SPEEDWAY – VERNON, NY – Survival of the Underdogs. West Winfield, N.Y.’s Jeremy Slosek survived the 20 lap ‘Non-Winners’ event for the Taylor’s Trailers Crate 602 Sportsman to pick up his second career win at Utica-Rome Speedway.
Night No. 1 of the Zielinski’s Asphalt & Finish Line Designs ‘Empire State Showdown’ saw four different drivers lock into the 50-lap, $2,400-to-win main event tonight for the Taylor’s Trailers Crate 602 Sportsman.
Jeremy Slosek did so by winning the 20-lap feature event, clinching a guaranteed starting spot (worth $250), $300 for the win, and an extra $100 courtesy of Christian Fabrications.
“Our carburetor hasn’t been acting right all night,” Slosek proclaimed. “It’s still not 100%, but luck was on our side tonight for sure.”
Slosek started from the pole position following the redraw, but it was Sauquoit, N.Y.’s Stephen Denton who rolled off the outside of the front row to take the early lead.
Denton led the first six laps of the main event, before his racecar went up in smoke, ending his night early.
“Stephen (Denton) would’ve walked away from me,” Slosek explained. “It was going to be tough to pass him, but it looked like his motor expired and we were in the right place at the right time… I hate it for him.”
Slosek led the final 14 laps of the main event, holding off a hard charging David Dickey, of Mt. Upton, N.Y.
Dickey settled for the runner-up spot, with Seth Martin, Tanner Warner, and Dylan Nichols rounding out the top five.
Each of the top five received an extra $100 courtesy of Christian Fabrications.
The Taylor’s Trailers Crate 602 Sportsman also had two rounds of timed hot laps, with the fastest in each session locking into the redraw for tonight’s 50-lap headliner.
Chip Constantino (20.095) was the quickest in the first session, and Seth Martin (20.197) was the fastest in session two.
Jayden Wust was the other driver locking into the 50-lap feature, by way of winning the Fastline Performance Limited Sportsman main event.
Corky Warner, Andrew MacFadden, Hayden Coons, and Mike Arnold all had cracks at the top spot, but it was ultimately Wust who prevailed with the victory.
The win was Wust’s third triumph of the year with the Fastline Performance Limited Sportsman.
Maddy Broedel, Michael Arnold, Nick Galusha, and Bodie Marks completed the top five.
The Fonda Fair Four Cylinders – under SCDRA rules – had their largest car count of the season with 27 cars.
Despite the healthy car count, it was track champions Rudy King Jr. (Dual Cam) and Wayne Russell Jr. (Single Cam) were victorious.
Sullivan Dickey was dominant all night in the All-Star Slingshot division, picking the win the heat race and the feature, his first career feature win at Utica-Rome Speedway.
Dickey upended Paul Holic and Tadd Granger.
Preston Trautschold got his third win of the season with the Junior Slingshots getting by Parker Fowler on the opening lap and leading all 15 laps of the feature for the victory.
For the September 21 event, a pre-race cornhole tournament will begin at 12 p.m. Pit gates open at 2 p.m. with grandstand gates unlocking at 3 p.m. Hot laps are slated for 5 p.m. and racing begins at 6 p.m.
Grandstand admission is $15 and kids 11 and under get in FREE.
Pit admission is $45 for Non-Members and $40 for Members. Kids (ages 6-12) are $10 and Children 5 and under are admitted for $2.
Also competing on Saturday are the SCDRA Four Cylinders (20 laps, $500 to win, $150 guaranteed Single Cam winner, $50 to start) plus the Allstar and Junior Slingshots.
