Story By: DEVIL’S BOWL SPEEDWAY – WEST HAVEN, VT – Matt Janczuk won Sunday’s Fabian Earth Moving Vermont 200 at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, collecting $10,000 for the win and 162 laps worth of lap money, totaling more than $4,000, for a total of more than $14,000. Josh Sunn was 2nd and Dominic Roselli was 3rd.
Janczuk positioned himself in the redraw through qualifying and managed to pull the No. 1 chip for the second year in a row. He was joined on the front row by Devil’s Bowl regular and qualifying ace Frank Hoard, III.
As expected, based on his performance last year, Janczuk jumped out front early on. The race was immediately stalled on lap one when Nick Heywood suffered an electrical issue in turn one, ending his night before it even began.
A few more cautions kept the pace down in the early going, including one for Scott Towslee and Jason Gray in turn two. Pit strategy came into play early as cars at the back like Brian Calabrese and Shawn McPhee took opportunities to come down pit road for fuel.
A litany of cars came down pit road during the stop No. 1 on lap 81, jumbling up the field. Janczuk and most of the other top runners never blinked, determined to maintain their track position and go 200 laps on one tank (24 gallons) of Sunoco Race Fuel.
Almost nobody pitted during stop No. 2 on lap 14, leaving the field mostly unchanged.
The second half of the race heated up in a big way with Chad Edwards leading a chunk, taking the lead from Janczuk on the outside lane on lap 155. He led until lap 173, giving it back to Janczuk right before caution laps stopped counting on lap 175. In the final 25 laps, Josh Sunn rocketed from the bottom half of the top 10 into the 2nd spot, nearly passing Janczuk multiple times in the final 10 laps, but in the end, it was Matt Janczuk becoming the first two-time winner of the Fabian Earth Moving Vermont 200. Sunn was 2nd with Roselli 3rd on the podium. Brian Calabrese was 4th with Richard Murtaugh 5th. Tim LaDuc, Bubba McPhee, Zach Sobotka, Edwards and Adam Pierson completed the top 10 in that order.
Sunday’s race also featured the Hoosier Racing Tire Novice Sportsman and the last segments of the 500cc mini sprint segment race from the weekend. Josh Bussino collected his second win of the year in the novice class, leading all 25 laps from the outside of the first row. Bussino ran the top masterfully to secure the dominant win. Logan Denis did not let Bussino escape too far, following him across the line just half a second behind, but was not able to match his speed as he rolled the bottom. Nick Austin-Neil was 3rd with Matt Wade 4th and Bobbi Hults 5th.
Peru, N.Y.’s Destin St. Clair won the overall segment race for the Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprints. St. Clair, only 12 years old, has called Devil’s Bowl Speedway home for his rookie campaign in 2024 and has made good use of his first year in the mini sprint. He picked up a 2nd place run on the inside track back in June, and now, by virtue of two segment wins and a 3rd place finish over the weekend, earned the most points to score the win. Quinn Quenneville was 2nd with a trio of runner-up results in all the segments.
Saturday’s noon slate of racing was equally as electric as Sunday’s. The annual Brown’s Quarried Slate and Farmstand night was filled with grat action, but Billy Duprey stole the show. On a day when the O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman took center-stage with a 40-lap feature offering the winner a guaranteed starting spot in Sunday’s 200, Duprey picked a good day to win his 2nd race of the year in dramatic fashion.
William Lussier Jr. led nearly the entire first half of the race, flying around the outside lane. He was passed for the lead by Cody O’Brien on lap 18. O’Brien ran the bottom, looking smooth and in command, but Lussier dropped down the track to go on the attack and reeled him back in. Meanwhile, Duprey was up to 3rd from his 12th starting spot, and he reeled in the lead duo from a long way back, passing Lussier on the bottom before scooting around O’Brien on lap 31. From there, the Hydeville driver sailed off to the win. He declined to attempt Sunday’s 200, giving the spot to runner-up Scott Towslee. Towslee went on to qualify for the race on his own and did not need the guaranteed spot. Mike Clark, Jr. was 3rd with O’Brien 4th and Alex Layn 5th. Lussier wound up 7th.
Saturday’s Sunoco Sportsman Modified non-winners race was won by Kevin Chaffee. Josh Sunn took advantage of a good starting spot to lead the first 17 laps, but Chaffee was able to roll the middle and take the lead away with seven laps remaining. Richard Murtaugh was 2nd with Sunn 3rd. Michael Wagner-Fitzgerald finished 4th with Marty Kelly, III 5th.
Brandon Piastka wired the 20-lap DIRTcar Xtreme Midget series feature. In their first appearance in Devil’s Bowl on the big track, the midgets put on a healthy display of racing with 12 cars in the pit area. They used the entire racetrack, vaulting around at serious speeds. Piastka was challenged throughout the race by Chris Murray, who took the long way around the track for the entire race but could not quite get by Piastka. Justin Sheridan was 2nd with Murray 3rd. Manny Dias and John Forlano completed the top five.
Saturday’s full-fendered, Fisher Auto Parts Mini Stock and 9th State Cannabis Crown Vic mains were entertaining, as well. Griff Mahoney held off Jake Barrows to score the win. Mahoney started 14th and had the lead by lap 12. Two laps later, Barrows was in 2nd position, hounding the leader. Adam Mahoney, Ron Alger, Ryan Patch and Eric Messier were all in the mix late, but Griff Mahoney’s No. 10 was fast on the front, grabbing win No. 3 for 2024 and narrowing the points gap to eight markers between himself and leader Brian Blake. Barrows was 2nd with Patch 3rd, Alger 4th and Blake 5th. Jeremy Brownell won the B-feature over Tim Robinson and Luke Marcheski.
Rob Steele won the 9th State Cannabis Crown Vic Feature. Hellen Steele and Scott Cram had the front row, but early trouble saw Cram be forced to exit to the pits. Rob Steele had the lead by lap seven and Norm Morrill followed him through into 2nd, but Steele did not relinquish the lead, instead pulling away to victory. Morrill was 2nd with Eric Friend 3rd.
