Column By: TOM WENNER / RPW – BECHTELSVILLE, PA – Brett Gilmore joined Eric Kormann in victory lane on Saturday Night, giving 2 of the longest tenured racing teams an opportunity to visit victory lane late in the 2024 season.
Brett Gilmore and the Gilmore Racing Team have a long history in racing stretching back 40 years. Charley Gilmore, then Kenny and Mike Gilmore, and now Brett Gilmore in the 3rd generation to carry on the historic Gilmore Racing #7 door panel to victory lane.
Saturday Night also featured 2 Kutztown based teams taking the wins with the Bailey Bunch and Gilmore’s visiting victory lane. Kenny Gilmore has actually had seat time in the Bailey Bunch #81 during his career.
Brett Gilmore’s last win, June 13, 2015. The Gilmore Racing team has fielded 2 cars this season – 1 for rookie Shannon Slaughter and 1 for Brett. Brett stands 6th in points, with Shannon is 28th.
BJ Joly and Stephen Smith led the T.P. Truck Equipment Sportsman field to the green flag.
The caution would come out for Zach Steffy, Brayden Shelton, and Joey Vaccaro before a lap was completed. Steffy spun in turn 4, Vaccaro and Shelton were collected. Steffy was towed off. Shelton and Vaccaro rejoined the field.
The field was given the green a 2nd time as BJ Joly took the lead with Smith, Lawson Szerencits, Mark Mohr, Shannon Slaughter, Colton Perry following
The caution appeared on Lap 2 for Brayden Shelton who lost the handle on the 39. He rejoined the field.
The field was restacked and back to action with BJ Joly taking the lead again. Smith, Mohr, Slaughter, Szerencits, Nate Horn, and Steve Young in chase.
Lap 4 and the caution is displayed for TJ Mayberry who is stopped in turn 2.
The field is restacked again and on the green flag Dakota Kohler and Steve Young are the recipients of a mid-pack jumble, Kohler is sitting against the turn 1 wall with his front end collapsed, Young will restart at the tail. The restart is set with Joly, Mohr, Smith, Horn, Slaughter, Szerencits, and Miller
BJ Joly takes command for lap 5, Mohr, Smith, Horn, and Slaughter are chasing.
Lap 8 is clicked off, we finally get some green laps with Joly setting the pace. Mohr, Horn, Smith, and Slaughter are the new Top 5. Colton Perry retires on lap 8.
Lap 10 is clicked off with Joly remaining the leader, Mohr, Horn, Miller, and Smith are the new Top 5.
The next caution appears in turn 4 of Lap 10, Nate Horn lost the handle on the 28 and spins collecting Teague Miller, Stephen Smith, Lawson Szerencits, Jesse Landis, Jesse Hirthler, and Shannon Slaughter. Nate Horn was running 3rd at the time of the caution. Miller and Slaughter head to the pits. Nate Horn is towed off.
The field is restacked for the restart with Joly, Mohr, Dylan Swinehart, Mike Schneck, Brett Gilmore, Adrianna Delliponti, Nathan Mohr, Parker Guldin, and Jesse Leiby.
On the restart Mark Mohr powers around the BJ Joly 924 for the race lead. Mike Schneck and Dylan Swinehart are side by side or 3rd and 4th with Brett Gilmore on their bumper.
Lap 12 Mohr is your leader with Mike Schneck up to 2nd, Joly 3rd, Dylan Swinehart now facing the challenge of Addison Meitler who is coming quickly in the Fenstermacher 712.
The caution is displayed on lap 13 for Addison Meitzler who flips violently after contact with Dylan Swinehart. Meitzler got into the wall and caught a pole that torn the front end completely off the 712 Sportsman Modified in the air.
BJ Joly, Ryan Graver, Jesse Landis, Logan Bauman, Parker Guldin, Brayden Shelton, Nathan Mohr, and Gavyn Krupp were all involved in some degree. Landis was pushed to the pits, The 712 was dropped in the infield, Mohr and Joly went to the pits.
Dylan Swinehart was sent to the rear for the contact. Addison Meitzler walked away from the accident and was checked with EMS. The field is restacked with Mark Mohr the race leader, Schneck, Gilmore, Smith, Delliponti, Vaccaro, and Jesse Hirthler.
The field attempts to go green and the caution is displayed once again for Stephen Smith and Brayden Shelton who tangle. Parker Guldin heads to the infield. The field is restacked for the lap 14 restart.
Mark Mohr brings the field to green flag, Mike Schneck, Brett Gilmore, Joey Vaccaro, and Adrianna Delliponti are the Top 5.
Lap 17 is scored, and Mark Mohr, Mike Schneck, and Brett Gilmore are now under blanket at the point. Brett Gilmore heads to the top lane looking to go 3rd to 1st.
Lap 18 Gilmore clears Schneck for 2nd.
Lap 19 Gilmore is on the bumper of Mohr and looking for room to grab the race lead.
5 to go, Mohr is still the race leader, Gilmore is stalking in 2nd. Schneck, Jesse Hirthler, and Vaccaro are the Top 5.
Lap 21, Brett Gilmore races around the outside of the Mohr 20M for the race lead, Mike Schneck remains 3rd, Jesse Hirthler rebounding to 4th, and Joey Vacaro rebounding for 5th.
Lap 23 and Mark Mohr is back after Brett Gilmore, Mohr is not finished and makes a run on Gilmore. Gilmore would clear for the lead, Mohr, Schneck, Hirthler and Vaccaro are the Top 5.
Brett Gilmore would go on to score his 2nd career Grandview Speedway 602 Sportsman victory. Mark Mohr is 2nd, Mike Schneck 3rd, Jesse Hirthler 4th, Joey Vaccaro 5th, Logan Bauman 6th, Adrianna Delliponti 7th, Gavyn Krupp 8th, Ryan Graver 9th, and Dylan Swinehart 10th.
