Column By: TOBY LAGRANGE / RPW – MALTA, NY – The Limited Sportsman division here in the Capital District of New York State has now been around for well over a decade.
In that time new drivers have come and gone, with some moving on to different divisions and others just deciding a few years was enough to satisfy their dirt track racing appetite.
Every once in a while, a driver will debut in the division and proceed to take off with feature wins and ultimately track championships.
One such rookie driver is Nick Brundige.
Brundige exploded on the scene this spring with a pair of feature wins in the month of May. On Friday night he added another, increasing his season long total to 11.
Those 11 trips to the winners circle also have led the Round Lake, New York driver to a pair of track championships. Those titles came at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway and the Glen Ridge Motorsports Park.
With a resume that reads like that of a veteran campaigner, what more could the 21-year-old ask for out of the 2024 season?
How about a win in the most lucrative race the division has ever had?
“We are going to try and make the DIRTcar Sportsman (series) race on Friday,” Brundige said. “We are going to try and dial it in and make sure it is ready and good for Saturday.”
Brundige, who just turned 21 on September 16th, had a good game plan coming into Friday night’s $750 to win tune-up for this weekends lucrative event.
“It was a good race with a good redraw,” Brundige said. “I didn’t know where we would start obviously but I knew all I could do is put it in the redraw and hope for the best.”
Speaking of that lucrative event, the Limited Sportsman division will compete in a $2,000 to win (minimum) event on Saturday evening. The event will be on the card with the Malta Massive Weekend Super DIRTcar Series and DIRTcar Pro Stock Series events. The remainder of the field will also see an increased purse.
The heat races will also see the winners bring home some cash as they will pay $100 to win courtesy of All-American Dumpster and Transport Services. While this may not sound like a lot, many tracks do not pay this much to win the feature event, let alone a heat race.
Special thanks goes out to JCL Plumbing, Lindell Fuels, Blue Spade Landscaping, Jacquier Welding and Katie Baldwin Designs for making this event a big one.
When looking back on a pair of track championships in his rookie season, Brundige was quick to thank those who turn the wrenches.
“I have to thank my dad and Jon Miller,” Brundige said. “They turned the wrenches on this car. It’s easy to drive it when it goes through the corners by itself.”
If you are able to make it out to the Great Race Place this weekend or will be watching it at home, be sure to stay tuned in for the Limited Sportsman event. Not only will you see great racing and drivers competing for money like they never had before, but you will at least see one driver who has taken off like few other have before him in the area’s newest division.
