Story By: KASEY KREIDER / LINDA’S SPEEDWAY – JONESTOWN, PA – On the third weekend of October each year, Linda’s Speedway – nestled away in Jonestown, PA – roars to life with the thundering sound of micro sprints. And throughout Friday and Saturday night, drivers and teams collaborated to write the 35th chapter of one of dirt track racing’s greatest stories: the Linda’s Speedway National Open.
Every good story has its heart-stopping moments, its heartbreaking moments, and its unlikely heroes that pave their way toward an ultimate triumph. The 35th 270 Micro Sprint National Open featured all of those characteristics, and the final hero turned out to be Fleetwood’s Jason Swavely, as the driver some call “The Rocketman” swiped away the victory on a green-white-checkered dash to the finish.
Swavely had won the final tune-up race for the National Open eight days prior, but flew somewhat under the radar while other competitors shined in the limelight in the buildup to the 40-lap finale.
2019 National Open champion Alex Swift made a big statement on Friday night. The Bridgeport, NJ native made a bold move on Steve Dunmire to win his heat race and secure the pole position for Saturday’s National Open A-Main. Swift then backed up his performance by claiming his fourth victory in the 26th Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic Race of Champions, tying him with Pat Bealer for the most wins all-time in that event.
Speaking of Bealer, it was “The Icon” from Lehighton, PA who established himself to many as the favorite for a potential National Open victory. The two-time National Open champ turned in a blistering 12.072-second lap time in time trials, almost two tenths of a second quicker than anyone else in the 81-car field. Bealer then backed up his flying lap with an empathic heat race win, putting himself on the outside of the front row for National Open 35.
Meanwhile, Swavely found himself showing plenty of speed in his own right. He timed third-fastest in his flight, and then went on to win his heat race, locking him into the fifth starting position for the A-Main, a spot much higher up than Swavely usually had started in the big show throughout years past.
But anybody can look fast on Friday night. Saturday night is where the men are separated from the boys. And it became apparent early on in the National Open A-Main that Swavely was going to have a real chance to score his first triumph in the world’s premier 270 event.
Bealer quickly jumped out to the lead at the drop of the green flag, showing the same command that he and car owner Chuck Palmucci’s No. 16c had displayed all weekend.
Swavely was patient and took advantage of some misfortune for some of the other front-runners. Transmission issues caused early runner-up Josh Stoyer to drop out of contention. And for Swift, his car caught fire in a bizarre incident while under a lap 9 red flag. The stoppage was initially caused by a scary incident for Parker Lucas, as his No. 199 tumbled out of the ballpark in turn 2. Lucas was okay, and after a brief break for wall repairs, the race resumed with Bealer leading Nick Skias and Swavely back to the green flag.
After spending a few laps plotting his move, Swavely made the pass for second stick on lap 12, and stayed in the runner-up spot until the halfway fuel stop at lap 20.
Despite charging up to second, Swavely admitted at the break that he would need a little luck to contend with Bealer’s machine. Perhaps that luck came in the form of the 18-lap green-flag run that began the race’s second half. Bealer once again pulled away, but was forced to deal with lapped traffic for several circuits while Swavely attempted to close.
As the laps wound down, Bealer’s car began to fade with an engine that seemed to be dying on him. But it still appeared that Bealer would be able to limp home with the buffer that he had built up prior to his issues. All of that went out the window though when the yellow lights flashed on with a half-mile remaining for an off-the-pace vehicle in turn 4. Swavely would get his chance to close right to Bealer’s back bumper for the final two laps.
Bealer had the advantage of clean air as the leaders fired through the restart zone, but his wounded engine left him at a disadvantage in his efforts to defend Swavely. The Mike Rice-owned No. 2R got a run off of turn 2 and powered to the inside down the backstretch. The two combatants drag-raced and rubbed wheels coming under the white flag, but Swavely cleared into turn 1 and would not be denied in his pursuit of a crown-jewel victory.
With a car length of daylight between them, Swavely led Bealer under the twin checkers, adding his name to the list of legends to have tasted National Open triumph. Bealer was forced to settle for second, and another agonizing near-miss in the event. Ross Perchak completed the podium, with Skias and Pat Kelly finishing off the top five.
Driven2SaveLives’ sponsorship of the Wingless 600 Micro Sprint National Open added a little extra incentive for Deptford, NJ’s Christian Bruno in his efforts to win the race for the second straight year. With organ donation being a cause that hits close to home for the Bruno family, the driver of the Groff Motorsports/SRE No. 5 led all 40 laps and parked it in the winner’s circle – becoming the first driver to repeat in the eighth edition of the Wingless 600 National Open event.
Bruno time-trialed seventh-quickest on Friday night, but that ended up being a blessing in disguise, as it put him into the first heat race with a chance to earn the pole for the feature. Bruno took advantage of an excellent start to get past quick-timer and 2022 National Open champ Tommy Kunsman, and won that heat race to lock in the top starting spot for the 40-lap A-Main.
Bruno paced the field uncontested through the first few laps. But after a lap 6 restart came a grueling, 31-lap green-flag run, testing the endurance and the patience of the accomplished driver. Bruno was forced to navigate lapped traffic with runner-up Colin White never more than about four or five car lengths behind. At times, White was able to close to his bumper, but couldn’t execute the pass.
The caution finally waved with four laps to go when two lapped cars tangled up just ahead of the leaders. Both Bruno and White avoided the chaos, and dialed in for the final sprint to the finish. Although White did his best to keep Bruno honest over the final mile, he was unable to mount a substantial charge.
Bruno led White across the finish line by two car lengths, with Tim Buckwalter rounding out the podium. National Open rookie Chase Schott finished an impressive fourth, and Zack Bealer completed the top five.
On Friday night, the Junior Sprints competed in their inaugural National Open event. Fans were treated to a thrilling battle between Jase Smith, Jax Wittmer, and Braylon Morris. All three drivers traded positions throughout the 20-lap event. But on the final one-lap dash to the finish, the track champion was able to motor around the outside of Wittmer through turns 3 and 4, and Smith claimed the victory by a bumper – 0.033 seconds to be exact – in the Storm Chassis Junior Sprint National Open A-Main.
