RPW Exclusive: Lake View Erupts With Debut Of Flat Track Racing; Sportsmanship Steals The Show

Column By: CHARLES WISLER / RPW – NICHOLS, SC – Lake View Motor Speedway roared to life on February 28, 2025, with the thunderous debut of flat track motorcycle racing, courtesy of RPM Promotions LLC.
The inaugural event delivered a thrilling night of competition, capped by Justin Jones’s dominant victories in both the Pro Outlaws Singles and Pro Outlaws Singles/Twin races.
While Jones’s performance captivated the crowd, it was a moment of unexpected sportsmanship that truly defined the evening. During a heated race, Jacob Vanderkooi went down, a stark reminder of the inherent risks of the sport. What followed, however, was a powerful display of camaraderie.
Four competitors, Aidan Brown, Jett Katarzy, Kaleb Martin, and Ian Wolfe, immediately slowed and rode over to check on Vanderkooi’s well-being. This act of concern, captured in a striking photograph by myself, resonated deeply with the audience, showcasing the strong bond among racers.
It was an incredible moment that I was able to observe while attending the race with my 5-year-old son. To see those riders put aside the competition and prioritize their fellow racer’s safety – that’s what racing is all about.
The incident provided a valuable life lesson for my son, illustrating the importance of sportsmanship and empathy. It was a perfect teaching moment for me to teach him that it’s not just about the race; it’s about looking out for each other.
This moment of solidarity highlighted the unique value of local racetracks. Beyond the adrenaline-fueled action, these venues serve as community hubs, fostering connections and providing opportunities for meaningful experiences.
Last year, I was wondering how local tracks could increase attendance. And this is it. By supporting your local tracks, you’re not just watching a race; you’re supporting the chance to witness these unforgettable moments. You might be giving a child a hero to look up to, or you might have the chance to teach a life lesson, right there at the track.
The success of the debut event has fueled anticipation for the next flat track races at Lake View Motor Speedway, scheduled for May 10th and 11th. RPM Promotions LLC and the speedway are poised to continue building on this momentum, promising more thrilling racing and opportunities for community connection.
