Story By: FONDA SPEEDWAY – FONDA, NY – The iconic Track of Champions roared to life on Sunday afternoon as Fonda Speedway held its annual Open Practice.

The test and tune session – postponed 24 hours by rain and snow on Friday and Saturday – saw 84 cars hit the half-mile track for a three-hour session. A sizable crowd filled the historic covered grandstands to get a glimpse of on-track action.

Competitors got their first laps on an all-new clay surface put in place last October by speedway promoter Brett Deyo and the Montgomery County Agricultural Society.

Fonda was one of just three New York State tracks to swing open the gates over the weekend with challenging weather conditions.

“Despite some soft spots, the new clay was very well received by racers,” Deyo said. “The feedback was positive, and we all feel that we are going to have something to build on as it dries out.”

Divisions represented during the Open Practice included Amsterdam Truck Center Modifieds, Swagger Factory Apparel Sportsman, Leatherstocking Credit Union Pro Stocks, Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman and Fonda Fair Four Cylinders, Saturday night staples at Fonda.

A half-dozen 358-Modifieds took to the track in advance of the May 14 ‘River Rage’ midweek event for the division. 358-Modifieds will receive a $250 bonus weekly in Amsterdam Truck Center Modified competition, as well.

Sprint Cars and Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modifieds also took advantage of lap time to prepare for special events on the 2025 agenda.

Attention now turns to ‘A 12A Opening Day’ honoring Jumpin’ Jack Johnson Saturday, April 19 to officially kick off the 74th season at the Track of Champions. Points begin in all divisions.
