Story By: JUSTIN ST. LOUIS / SPRINT CARS OF NEW ENGLAND – PLATTSBURGH, NY – Jordan Poirier has taken a liking to Airborne Park Speedway. The Canadian star crossed the border to win the season opener for the McGee Automotive Family Sprint Cars of New England Tour (SCoNE), taking his second-straight win at the track, dating back to August 2024.

Rain showers earlier in the day forced a one-hour delay in the program, but the added moisture made for a smooth, racy surface that offered multiple racing grooves and fast lap times. Average lap speeds in the qualifying heats topped 115 miles per hour on the .45-mile, D-shaped oval.

Poirier, the reigning Empire Super Sprints (ESS) champion from St-Mathieu-de-Beloeil, Québec, was one of four drivers to dice it up at the front, joining a New York trio in Jeff Trombley, Matt Tanner, and polesitter Travis Billington. The race took three tries to get going, as a false start at the initial green flag nearly got Poirier and Trombley into a wreck. One the second attempt, rookie Mark Reynolds clipped the infield tire barrier and flipped his car, bringing out the red flag; Reynolds was not injured.

Finally, with a clean start, Trombley was able to out-drag Billington into the first corner and take the lead. Traffic shuffled throughout the field in the opening circuits before another rookie, Tyler Chartrand, spun his car while racing just outside the top-five with four laps complete. The final 21 laps were incident-free, which created lapped traffic situations for the leaders. Trombley’s sizable advantage went away, and Poirier began stalking him for several laps as they navigated slower cars, all while Tanner – who started ninth – joined them.

After some tense moments and close calls, Poirier threaded the needle to take command at lap 15, and Tanner scooted past Trombley for second. Tanner reeled in Poirier late in the race, but a bobble with just two laps left allowed Poirier to pull away for the win. Tanner finished as the runner-up with Trombley third.

Chase Moran, battling a skip in his car’s engine, was strong enough to finish fourth. Billington – who raced with a handbrake installed in his car after suffering several broken toes earlier in the week – held on for fifth place. The balance of the top 10 was completed, in order, by reigning SCoNE champion Matt Hoyt, Jake Williams, Bryan Cloutier, Will Hull, and Kadyn Berry.
