Story By: NATHAN ALDRICH / PENN CAN SPEEDWAY – SUSQUEHANNA, PA – The deck was stacked against Penn Can speedway’s season opener Friday night after the track received a heavy shower just before race time.

Mother nature couldn’t hold down a spry crowd however as a packed grandstand watched an adrenaline filled Modified Feature.

John Michael Phillips drew the pole with Nick Petrilak leading the first lap from the outside pole. An early yellow brought Corey Cormier pitside, he would not return. With two laps complete Petrilak selected the outside as Kevin Hartnett moved into second slicing under Phillips.

As the lap times picked up Hartnett stayed tight to the tail of Petrilak’s 72 machine. The pair dueled through lapped traffic when disaster struck, leaving Hartnett spun in turn 3. With the field restacked Petrilak once again rocketed away from Phillips on the outside putting some distance on the field as Justin Holland worked his way to second.

With 5 laps remaining the pair caught the lapped machine of Bobby Puckett. Petrilak would have to jump on the binders while Holland slid to the inside of turn 4 to take the lead. With two laps remaining a Jamie Bedford spin with the leaders approaching brought out the yellow, resetting the field for a one lap shootout.

Holland nailed the final lap, passing under the checkers with a healthy lead as Petrilak, Phillips, Brian Puckett and Brad Weaver completed the top 5. Victory Lanes will be held next week due to the impending rain.

Next up for Penn Can is their Mother’s day special with grandstand admission $5 off for all moms.
