Story By: ROBERT HILL JR. / MOHAWK INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY – HOGANSBURG, NY – It might officially be the first day of summer, but the Mohawk International Raceway has been heating up for a few weeks now, and this night was no different as Dank Bank Recreational Cannabis Dispensary presented an action-packed night of heart-pumping action with a full card of racing on deck and some surprise invaders on the property with cancellations north of the border due to weather.

Kicking off the night would be the mini-stock division. Emily Massy would take the first heat of the evening after issues between CJ Lavair and Stephen Bushy sent them both pit-side with mechanical troubles. Heat #2 would be led flag to flag by Vermont’s Ken Tourville. By virtue of their heat victories, it would be last week’s feature winner Emily Massy and the ever-competitive Ken Tourville on the front row for the 12-lap feature event. Massy would get a great jump from the drop of the green flag, taking the lead on the first lap and never looking back en route to her 2nd victory in a row and 3rd of her career.

Limited Sportsman would roll around the circuit next, with heat #1 bringing an exciting battle between Justin Lazore and Joe Chartier out front until issues hindered Chartier’s run on lap #3, and it would be Lazore taking the first heat of the night. Heat race #2 would be dominated by Jackson Welling, leading flag to flag en route to his first career Limited Sportsman heat race victory. Jackson Welling and Bryan Tarbell would lead the field to the green flag in the 15-lap feature race. Caution would fly on lap 1 as Parker Dermody went off the track at the top of turn 2. Alex Reif would slow the field again on lap 2 after he went off the track, much like Dermody, in turn 2. Tarbell would launch off the line with great pace, pulling away from Welling before the yellow flew again on lap 3 for Jacorey Thompson-Arquette, who clipped the tire and spun in turn 3. When the green flew at the tail of lap 3, it would be Tarbell on the loud pedal once again as he would try to hold off a hard-charging Welling. Tarbell would concede the lead to Welling on lap 10 before Welling broke just 2 laps later, bringing the caution out again with 3 to go. Tarbell would pick up where he left off when the green flew again and ultimately take the win.

The DIRTcar 358 Modifieds would hit the track next, with Jarrett Herbison and Chris Raabe duking it out early in the first heat of the night. Herbison made the high lane work as Raabe flirted with the bottom lane, but around the halfway point, Herbison would pull away and looked to be a lock for the win until Louis Jackson Jr lit the track on fire en route to the victory. Heat #2 would see Brianna Ladoucer and Jake Granacker lead the field to the green flag before a red flag brought the field to a halt on lap #1, as Franklin Mackin would flip on the backstretch. He would be okay. Brianna Ladoucer would lead early until rookie Thomas Cook was able to use the high side and hustle his way to the race lead, earning his first career heat win in the DIRTcar 358 Modifieds. The 3rd and final heat would see Brian ‘Slim’ McDonald lead the field to green and pull ahead of Jordan McCreadie early on. He’d lead all 8 laps en route to the win. Jordan McCreadie and Brianna Ladoucer would lead the field to the green flag in their 30-lap feature event. McCreadie would take control of the race early, but Raabe would quickly navigate his way through the field and find himself bumper to bumper with McCreadie just prior to the halfway point. Behind them, Jackson Jr. and Herbison would battle it out with Ladoucer for the 3rd through 5th positions. Chris Raabe would take the lead on lap 14 as they began to navigate through lapped traffic. Caution would fly on lap 16 for Jake Granacker, who spun around in turn 4. On the restart, Raabe would channel his inner Superman as he absolutely pulled away from McCreadie, Ladoucer, and Jackson Jr., ultimately taking the victory once again.

DIRTcar Sportsman would be well represented with 24 cars on the property for the night. Heat #1 would see Mario Dupuis and Skylar Ladoucer lead them to the green flag. Ladoucer would grab the lead early, as Shane Pecore was slicing and dicing his way through the field, climbing 6 spots in the first 2 laps of this one. Ladoucer would feel a bit of pressure and slap the outside wall down the frontstretch around the midway point, but he’d hang on to take the victory by a car length over Pecore. Heat #2 would see Dan Reif and Kent Miller lead the field to green, as Donovan Lussier would be the hard charger up through the pecking order to take a sniff of the race lead, but it wouldn’t be enough as Reif would take the win. The 3rd and final heat of the night would see Karl Potvin and Rico Hernandez lead the field to the green flag, and off the drop of the flag, the battle would be between Potvin and last week’s feature winner Brennan Moore. Moore would work the high line early and often, taking the lead at the white flag and stealing the win. Kristian Smoke and defending track champion Tristan Ladoucer would lead the field to the green flag for the 25-lap feature race. They would hold onto the lead for the first 12 and a half laps until Shane Pecore snuck by up top and stole the lead from Ladoucer, then began pulling away. Lussier would drive his way to 3rd position but wasn’t quite able to get up there to fight it out with Ladoucer or Pecore for the top spot. Ladoucer and Pecore would come together on the front straightaway, which would continue leading to both going off the track in turn 1 with 5 laps to go. This allowed Lussier to take the lead and the victory in a rare visit to join us at MIR.

DIRTcar Pro-Stocks would be the final class of the night to hit the track. Kevin Feterly Jr. and Tyler Bushey would lead the field to the green flag. Battles were intense throughout the field, with Sid Harmer Jr., Eric Jean-Louis, and Jocelyn Roy dabbling in a three-wide fight in the mid-field. Feterly would hold on and win heat #1. Last week’s feature winner Denis Gauvreau and Roch Aubin would take the front row for heat #2. Gauvreau would hammer down from the drop of the green flag with nobody in sight to contend for it, en route to the win. The 3rd and final heat race of the night would see Dakota Sharp and Kurt Russell on the front row leading the field to the green flag. Sharp would see a new contender in Zack Daniels closing in on him early, but Daniels wasn’t quite able to close enough, and Sharp would take the heat win. Feterly Jr. would get out to the early lead, but Gauvreau would fire back on the high side to take the lead on lap #3. The lead would trade many times over the next few laps as Sharp and Daniels closed the gap to the leaders. Caution would fly on lap 9 for Aubin, who spun around in turn 4. On the restart, Gauvreau would bobble, losing a few spots to Feterly, Sharp, and Daniels. Sharp would take the lead late before a yellow flag would fly with 4 laps to go for Jason Feterly, stopped atop turn 1. On the restart, Sharp would hammer down and make it stick, holding onto the victory over Gauvreau and Daniels.

Our next event at the Mohawk International Raceway is Monday, June 30th, as the Super DIRTcar Series comes to town for the first time since 2019 when ‘Money’ Mat Williamson took the victory. Also on the card are Sportsman, Limited Sportsman, and Mini-stocks.
