Father And Son “Fast Freddie” And Matt Little Capture Devil’s Bowl Wins; AJ Munger Picks Up Sportsman Feature

Story By: MIKE BRUNO / DEVIL’S BOWL SPEEDWAY – WEST HAVEN, VT – Racing at Devil’s Bowl Speedway is always a family affair. Never was that more evident than Saturday night, when a father and son both landed in victory lane, and the progeny of one of the most popular drivers ever to turn the wheel at the ½ mile track also scored an impressive win. The Sprint Cars of New England invaded the Green Mountain state as well, and one of the circuit’s rising stars left the crowd in awe with his dazzling performance.

“Fast Freddie” Little, a past four-time champion in the pro stock division, earned his first win of the season as he dominated the O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman 25-lap feature. Katrina LeClaire led the first two laps before Little captured the point on a lap-three restart. Little had to fend off a pair of challenges from Cody O’Brien after back-to-back caution flags as the field tried to complete the first six laps. After the green flew again on lap seven, Little drove away, leading the final 18 laps to complete the win. Point leaders Alex Layne and Jason Quenneville both struggled with issues on the night, allowing other drivers to gain ground in the championship race. O’Brien crossed the line second, followed by Matt Wade, LeClaire, and Tyler Travis.

Not to be outdone, Little’s son Matt recorded the first victory in the early stages of his career in the Hoosier Tire Novice Sportsman feature. The younger Little held off a strong effort from former Crown Vic champion Rob Steele in the closing laps to park his machine in victory lane. Mark McGinnis led the first 10 laps of the 20-lap event. Little wrestled the top spot away on lap 11and never let it go. Little had to survive green-white-checkered restarts on laps 19 and 20 as the race slipped into overtime. Steele, Aiden Benoure, Matt Cram, and Jim Mattison completed the top five.

In the Sunoco Sportsman Modified feature AJ Munger, the offspring of Devil’s Bowl legend Gene “The Flying Farmer” Munger, held off a stout field of contenders to collect his first checkered flag of the 2025 campaign. Marty Kelly III and Alex Palmer-Sawyer led the field to the start, with Kelly leading the first seven circuits, but it was evident early that Munger had a fast hot rod. Munger took the lead on lap seven and kept it for the final 23 laps. Josh Masterson placed Munger under attack in the final laps, but the competitor nicknamed “AJ Slideways” after the great Alan Johnson was not to be denied. Kelly placed third for his best run of the season, followed by Justin Comes and Troy Audet.

Chase Moran started in the 10th spot for the 25–lap McGee Automotive Sprint Cars of New England feature and put on a show that the fans in attendance will not soon forget. The young Fultonville, NY. driver sliced and diced his way through the pack like a seasoned veteran, leaving some of the top wheelmen in the series in his wake. The battle started slowly with caution flags emerging on each of the first three laps. Scott Holcomb was credited with leading the opening lap, but he was overtaken by Kyle Smith on the lap two restart. Smith showed the way for the next 19 laps, while Jeff Trombley appeared to have the fastest car on the track as he navigated his way to second. Moran however, was a man on a mission and passed Smith for the lead on lap 22, and fought off Floyd Billington and Trombley after a green-white-checkered restart to seal the deal. Holcomb faded to fourth with Travis Billington rallying from an early issue to salvage a top-five finish.

In the Friend Construction 500cc feature, defending track champion Gage Provencher continued his torrid pace, winning for the third time in his last four starts. John Smith paved the way for the first nine laps before succumbing to Chris Pierce on lap 10. Pierce seemed to have things well in hand until the caution lights illuminated two laps later. That was the break that Provencher needed as he pulled off a daring move on the restart, threading the needle between Pierce and Smith to grab victory from the jaws of defeat. Smith completed his fine run with a second-place finish, followed by Quinn Quenneville, Pierce, and Alyssa Vanderpool.

The evening concluded with the Fisher Auto Parts feature, with Gerry Jordan surviving one of the wild races of the season to take home the first-place trophy. After Adam Stewart led the opening laps, Kaleb Shepard seized control on lap three. Shepard, who has had a fast car every week, seemed poised to step to the top of the podium for the first time this season. It wasn’t to be, however, as he crashed out between turns three and four two laps later, bringing out the caution. Jordan grabbed the lead on the restart and was somehow able to withstand a series of unfortunate events to be ruled the victor after the race was halted for a turn two incident after reaching the 15-minute time limit. Completing the top five behind Jordan were Caleb Sprague, Gerard Jordan, Jeremy Brownell Jr., and Chris Charboneau.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway will be back in action on Saturday, July 19th, for “Hometown Heroes First Responders Night.” Free grandstand admission for Rutland Regional Medical Center employees and all Police, Fire, Rescue, and Military with ID. Twin 20-lap features for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman and a “Wild and Crazy” 50-Enduro. Regular Grandstand Admission is $15. Kids 12 and under are free. Pit admission is $30 for members, $40 for non-members. Racing begins at 7 p.m.
