Lucas Fuller Breaks the Barrier: First-Ever Modified Win Headlines Big Night at Brockville

Story By: TIM BALTZ / BROCKVILLE ONTARIO SPEEDWAY – BROCKVILLE, ON. – Superior Cellular and Sound was back as title sponsor this past Saturday night at the Brockville Ontario Speedway, which saw a big event for the DIRTcar Sportsman North Regional Series. A full field was set for battle along with stars in the Suprenant Truck Shop Crate Sprint Cars, DIRTcar 358 Modified, Novice Sportsman and the Mini Stocks, who also had an extra distance event.
Josh Verne Jr. was looking to keep the roll going after a hard hit the night before at Ohsweken Speedway. The Theresa New York native took over the lead at the drop of the green in the 20 lap Surprenant Truck Shop Crate Sprint Car feature with veterans Rick Wilson and Lee Ladouceur right there to challenge. Verne was able to shake off the veteran drivers and pull away to a big lead. Ladouceur began to charge forward, taking second from Wilson and tried his best to close in on the leader. Just past halfway the handling started to go away which allowed Ladouceur to close, along with Adam Turner, who cleared Rick Wilson for the third spot. Over the final laps, Josh Verne Jr. was able to hold on to an ill handling car and maintain a comfortable lead, scoring his 4th win in a row and move into a three way tie for the all time win record in Crate Sprints at Brockville. Ladouceur held off Adam Turner for second for the fourth straight week, while Guy Gosselin and Ryan Poole 5th.
The DIRTcar Sportsman North Regional Series was ready for 40 laps and Xavier Andrews was able to grab the lead with Jessica Power making a big move from 5th to 2nd in the early going. The top two drivers were fast but Shane Pecore and Bobby Herrington were not too far behind as they closed in quickly. The top five kept their cars stuck to the bottom of the track, which became the fast way around. On lap 16 the first yellow flew for Madie Wallace who slowed on the back stretch. Once the green flew Andrews stayed in front with Pecore taking second from Power and the battle was on. Over the next 8 laps the top 5 were all close together battling for the lead as they navigated traffic perfectly. On lap 31 another yellow flew setting up a key restart for Shane Pecore. When the green flew Pecore was able to get to the top of the track and grab the lead, while Andrews had to deal with Tristan Ladouceur, who made his way to third. Pecore looked to be driving away until another yellow flew once again. On the restart Pecore was able to get out front and even with a few late cautions, Shane Pecore was not to be denied as he scored his 12th career DIRTcar Sportsman Series win and 29th Brockville victory. Andrews settled for second over Tristan Ladouceur, Bobby Herrington and Jessica Power.
Lucas Fuller was the early pace setter of the 30 lap DIRTcar 358 Modified feature as Johnathon Ferguson and Lee Ladouceur gave a challenge early on. Fuller was up front and in control using the top lane all around the speedway. By lap 8 the top two had pulled away, but the yellow flew for Ladouceur, who slowed with a right rear flat tire. Fuller got a great restart on lap 8 and was able to put some distance between himself and the rest of the field, with Ferguson and Gabriel Cyr making up the top three. Fuller was on a rail on this night, hooked up to the top side of the track, but Ferguson was close by and waiting to take advantage of a mistake. With 10 to go, Fuller was well in control but had company in the form of lapped traffic. With 5 to go Fuller cleared the traffic and despite a late charge from Johnathon Ferguson, this night belonged to Lucas Fuller, as he marched to his first career DIRTcar 358 Modified feature win. Johnathon Ferguson finished up second with Gabriel Cyr, Tristan Draper and last week’s winner Kyle Dingwall taking 5th.
The Mini Stock division always provides some excellent racing and this extra distance 25 lap event was no different. Jamie Larocque was able to grab the lead on lap 5 after a fierce battle with Clayton Celovsky and Mike Saunders. One of the stories was veteran Darryl Steele, who returned to the driver’s seat on this night and was battling strong in the top three and used patience to stay with the lead battle. Behind him Hayden Brown was on the move coming to second on lap 13, with Celovsky, Steele and Terry McClelland battling hard in the top 5. A quick yellow bunched the field up for a restart on lap 18 and once the race got going Larocque was able to stay up front and out of the tough battles behind him between Brown, Celovsky and Steele. In the end, Jamie Larocque, would master the quarter mile oval for the first time since last year in August, for win number 1 of the season. Clayton Celovsky crossed in 2nd with Terry McCelland, Marc Dagenais and Rylan Banks 5th.
The night would be completed with a 12 lap Novice Sportsman feature as Cory Lambert led the way early, but the driver to watch was Watertown New York’s Grayson Adderley. The son of former Modified driver Mike Adderley, moved his way forward and battle Lambert early on. Adderley would march by to take the top spot on lap 4 and author one of the most dominant performances this year. Adderley would drive away from the field to record his first ever Brockville win by over 7 seconds at the finish. Cory Lambert, Damien King, Kyle Kudrinko and Shawn Reid rounded out the top 5.
Next week the second leg of the Ogilvie’s Triple Crown Series for the DIRTcar 358 Modified and DIRTcar Sportsman will be ready to go, plus a full show for Street Stock, Novice Sportsman and Surprenant Truck Shop Crate Sprints.
The green flag drops at 7pm.
