Matt Sheppard Opens Short Track Super Series “Lumberjack Swing” With Autodrome Granby Victory
Story By: BRETT DEYO / SHORT TRACK SUPER SERIES – GRANBY, QC – Off to a good start.
On Night No. 1 of the ‘Lumberjack Swing’ at Autodrome Granby, Matt Sheppard outdueled rival Stewart Friesen for a $10,000 payday following the 60-lap Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco Modified event.
The win for Sheppard was the 55th of his career with the series and third consecutive HYTORC of New York North Region triumph.
Sheppard, of Savannah, N.Y., staved off a brief challenge from Friesen and survived several restarts to pick up the victory in front of a massive crowd.
“The restarts were a little dicey,” Sheppard said. “We had a really good car all night. Once we got rolling, the thing drove flawlessly.
“This is one of my favorite tracks – so cool to win in front of a huge crowd tonight.”
Sheppard cleared Stewart Friesen to become the race’s third leader at lap 15, surrendered the top spot back at lap 16 and took a top spot he would not relinquish on the 18th tour of the massive half-mile oval.
Friesen guided the Halmar International No. 44 to a $5,000 runner-up finish, citing his car as “too good, too early.”
Felix Roy of Napierville, Quebec drove to a third-place finish, ahead of fellow Canadian Samuel Charland, who marched forward from 12th – the worst position in the Beyea Custom Headers Redraw – and Ontario’s Chris Raabe, up from 10th.
Finishing sixth through 10th, respectively, were Autodrome Granby dominant force David Hebert, who drove through the field after a pit stop; early race leader Jack Lehner of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; Quebec’s Mathieu Desjardins; Sabastien Gougeon, up from 14th; and Canandaigua, N.Y.’s Alex Payne, driving a car from the Francois Bellemare stables.
Heat winners for the 30 STSS Modifieds were Desjardins, Sheppard and Mario Clair.
Michael Parent was the ATL Fuel Cells Hot Lap Hero at 17.962 seconds.
Racing continues tonight – July 23 – at Le RPM Speedway in Saint-Marcel-de-Richelieu, Quebec with another 60-lap, $10,000-to-win event for the HYTORC of New York North Region.
