Scott Webb Shines In Christmas In July Feature At Can-Am Speedway
Story By: TIM BALTZ / CAN-AM SPEEDWAY – LAFARGEVILLE, NY – Toys for Tots and a great crowd was on hand for another big night of racing at the Can Am Speedway in Lafargeville New York. It was Christmas in July and Santa paid a visit and spread cheer to the crowd and some of the top drivers, who managed to get to victory lane.
The Eastern Ontario Vintage Stock Car Club made their one and only visit to Can Am this year and Paul Billings led the early laps of the 70/80 division, while Randy Gaudet tried to catch him. In the 50/60 class Greg Hale was in search of his third straight win as he tried to hold off a hard charging Jeff Cledgett. On lap 7 in the 70/80 class Gaudet was able to get by for the lead and pull away, while Hale was making it hard for Cledgett to get by. As the laps clicked off and no caution flag in the 20 lap feature, Randy Gaudet was dominant as he scored his first Can Am win since the 2001 season when he won a DIRTcar Sportsman feature at the speedway. Greg Hale would hold off Jeff Cledgett to score his 3rd straight Can Am win, which put hi in a tie for 4th on the tracks all time Vintage Modified win list.
Mike Durham was once again looking to score his first career win in the 12 lap Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman class, leading early with Brayden Bullock right there to challenge. A quick yellow came out on lap 6, which played into the hands of Brayden Bullock and Mason Rogers, who had moved into the top three. When the green flew it was Durham in control again but Brayden Bullock used the top lane to charge to the lead by lap 8 with Rogers taking second. With three laps to go Bullock went too wide in turn 4 allowing Rogers to get by and drive on. From this point forward Mason Rogers would drive away from another quality field to score his second win in just three weeks at Can Am. Mike Durham, Brayden Bullock, Caleb Howard, Jackson Welling and Genavieve Bartlett completed the top 5.
George Sanford took the top spot at the start of the 20 lap Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint Cars with Josh Verne Jr. there to challenge. On lap 4 Sanford broke and took his car straight to the infield, handing Verne the lead with Bruno Richard taking second. On lap 8 a scary moment saw James Kiah take a wild flip in turn two, which brought out the red flag. Kiah would climb out uninjured. When the green flew Verne once again charged to the lead as Richard tried to keep pace. Verne was able to pull away and put plenty of distance between himself and the resto of the field. Without help from a caution flag, Josh Verne Jr. would finally get back to a place where he has been familiar with, Can Am Victory Lane on this night. Verne scored his second win of the year and grabbed the point lead back. Bruno Richard, Andrew Hennessey, Ken Klinkowsky and last weeks winner Tiger Chapman 5th.
Tyler Meeks paced the field early in the 25 lap Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTcar 358 Modified feature, over Scott Webb and Billy Dunn. Meeks and Webb were able to pull away in the early laps and put on a great battle for the fans up front. On lap 10 Webb took the top spot away, while Dunn made his way to second and tried to run down the leader. Webb, who had not won since August of last year, was looking to get back into the winner’s circle, but Dunn was looking to make it two in a row. On lap 19 the yellow flew as Tim Fuller broke while running in the top 5. Shaun Shaw tried to avoid him but got collected. Fuller was done for the night, while Shaw had minimal damage and was able to continue. When the green flew Webb took the lead, but a new challenger in the form of Ryan Bartlett was on the move taking second. Bartlett had to start at the back with issues before the green start of the race, but was fast and closed in on the lead. On this night Scott Webb was too strong as he scored his first win of the season. Ryan Bartlett, Billy Dunn, Lance Willix and Willy Decker Jr. completed the top 5.
Frank Sibley was the dominant driver at the start of the 20 lap Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTcar Sportsman feature. Sibley had won his qualifying heat earlier in the day and was well in command, while Owen and Keegan Nier battled the for the 2nd and 3rd spots. As the laps clicked off it appeared Sibley was going to finally break through and grab that first career win, however the yellow flew on lap 15, which bunched up the field for a key restart. When the green flew Sibley remained in front but Keegan Nier was on the move and closed in. On lap 17 Nier took over the top spot, but Richard Murtaugh, last weeks winner, found some speed in the late going and charged to the runner up spot. With two laps to go Murtaugh tried for the lead but the yellow flew again, for Grayson Adderley, who blew a left rear tire while running 10th. On the final restart Richard Murtaugh went to work getting by Keegan Nier, then drove away unchallenged for his second win in a row. Keegan Nier crossed a best career finish of 2nd with Gavin Eisele making a late run to third. Owen Nier was fourth and Eric Nier 5th.
The final feature of the night was the 15 lap Sundance Leisure Thunder car event and Jared Gilson was the driver in command from the drop of the green flag. Gilson built up a big lead in the early laps with OJ White holding on to second. Gilson was running away from the field and was well on his was to a second career win. On lap 9 that all changed as third place running Todd Fleury lost a motor off turn 4 bringing out the yellow. Due to track conditions following this, track management and officials made the decision to call the feature complete at lap9 of the 15 lapper, resulting in Jared Gilson claiming his second career Can Am win. Francis White David Rasmussen Tyler Woods and OJ White completed the official top 5 finish.
Next week it’s a big night for the Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint Cars. A qualifying spot is on the line for the Northern Crate Nationals and a solid field is expected next Friday plus a full show for all other divisions. Gates open at 5pm with the first green flag flying at 7pm.
