Stewart Friesen Edges Out Alex Yankowski In Thrilling Finish To Emerge Victorious At Fonda On Saturday

Information By: RON SZCZERBA / FONDA SPEEDWAY – FONDA, NY – Palmer’s Service Center Night at the “Track of Champions” Fonda Speedway didn’t disappoint with great racing on a two groove race track in all division feature events. Alex Yankowski looked to be on his way to his second win of the 2025 season in the Amsterdam Truck Center 30-lap Modified main event but was nipped at the line by 0.008 seconds by Stewart Friesen who took the lead away on the final lap at the finish line.
The win for Friesen was the 99th of his career in the division, tying him with Dave Lape for third on the All-Time win list. Friesen’s first career win at Fonda was back on 7/27/2010 and in just 15 winning seasons he has achieved 99 total wins as he looks to grab win #100 this year just as Kenny Gates did a couple of weeks ago when he scored his 100th victory at Fonda.
“This win is also very special because we tied Dave Lape with 99 wins in total here at Fonda,” Friesen told Mimi Lazzaro in victory lane. “I grew up a Dave Lape fan, he, my grandfather, and father were all real good friends, really tight. It is really cool to be neck and neck with him right now. You never know when the last win will be your last, we’ll just try our best and keep digging.”
Other winners on Palmer’s Service Center Night were Josh Coonradt (first career win in the Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman division), Beau Ballard and Ivan Joslin (Leatherstocking Credit Union Pro Stocks), Corky Warner (Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman), Jason Peck (first career win at Fonda in the DOHC class) and Wayne Russell Jr. (SOHC) as winners in the Fonda Fair Four Cylinders.
It was also New York State Stock Car Association (NYSSCA) Night at Fonda with safety awards given out to drivers in all divisions who are members of the organization. Receiving awards ($100 for the first place NYSSCA member across the finish line and $75 for the second place NYSSCA member across the line) were Stewart Friesen and Alex Yankowski (Modifieds), Josh Coonradt and Chad Edwards (Crate 602 Sportsman), Ivan Joslin and Nick Stone (Pro Stocks), Corky Warner and Mason Gray (Limited Sportsman). In the Four Cylinder division, Jason Peck (DOHC) and Wayne Russell Jr. (SOHC) each won $100 with no second place award given.
Three special awards were also given out by the NYSSCA organization during opening ceremonies. The 2024 NYSSCA Dedication to Racing Pro Stock Excellence Award in Memory of Jimmy Langenback was given to Beau Ballard, the 2024 NYSSCA Overall Outstanding Performance Driver of the Year Award was given to Alex Yankowski, and the 2024 NYSSCA Humanitarian Award in Memory of Chaplain David Miller was given to AJ Greco. Short stories about these three awards can be seen on the NYSSCA Facebook page later this week.
Stephanie May performed the National Anthem during opening ceremonies while the 50/50 girls collected $2,339, a great job as always by Heather, Rose, and Julie, sending a lucky fan home with a big prize.
The real prize given away on Saturday night was great two groove racing in all divisions starting with the 30-lap Amsterdam Truck Center Modified division. Taking the green flag from the front row to start the event was Craig Hanson and Jessica Friesen with Hanson taking the lead at the drop of Joe Kriss’ green flag.
Fourth place starter and defending Track Champion Alex Yankowski got by Hanson for the lead on lap two and by lap four he held a straightaway advantage over Rocky Warner who was now second. On a lap nine restart, Jessica Friesen was the new second place car after she got by Hanson for position with her husband Stewart Friesen now fourth after starting 11th.
At the halfway point in the event the top five consisted of Yankowski, Warner, Stewart and Jessica Friesen, and seventh place starter Jack Lehner. Yankowski stretched out his lead and was in lap traffic when the caution came out for the final time with five laps to go for Lehner who stopped on the inside of the track in turn three and retired from the event while running fifth.
Stewart Friesen got by Warner for the second position on the restart, but Yankowski pulled away yet again to a comfortable lead. Until the final lap. Stewart Friesen found something on the inside of turns three and four and made up some ground with one lap to go, and on the final lap made up ground yet again as he and Yankowski were side by side at the finish line in a photo finish.
Friesen won the race by a mere 0.008 seconds over Yankowski with Warner, sixth place starter Bobby Hackel IV, and fifth place starter Ronnie Johnson completing the top five.
“I didn’t know how he was gonna protect,” Friesen said about Alex (Yankowski) in victory lane. “The top kind of went away out of four and the bottom came back to life. I found that before Rocky and Alex did, they were running their own race and didn’t see the whole picture. The last lap there when Alex drove the top I said man the bottom is getting better and better down here, and I just had enough.”
“We’re rolling right now, and we’ll just keep trying to ride this wave,” Friesen continued to say. “I know that Alex is gonna be pretty ticked at himself but I’m smiling about it, we snuck one away from him here tonight. Years down the road he is going to be sneaking wins away, so I don’t feel too bad about it right now.”
AJ Greco took the early lead from his outside front row starting position in the 25-lap Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman feature with Josh Coonradt second after starting alongside of Greco. A multi car pileup in turn one brought out the red flag before any laps were completed but there were no injuries with Greco taking the lead again on the original restart.
Greco held a half straightaway advantage on lap six which was all taken away when the caution flew for the third time for Tyler Peet who retired from the event at that point. Brett Mortensen who started in the fourth position moved past Matt Perry for the third position one lap before the halfway point with Greco, Coonradt, Mortensen, Perry and 12th place starter Chad Edwards in the top five at the halfway point.
On the outside of turns one and two on lap 11, Coonradt swung around the outside of Greco to take over the lead and as he pulled away Mortensen also got by Greco for the second position a few laps later. While Coonradt held a straightaway advantage, Brett Mortensen’s brother Mark moved into the top five after starting 19th as he got by both Dylan Madsen and Greco in a two for one move in turn four.
A yellow on lap 22 slowed the field and changed the way the top five would finish, but one spot that didn’t change was the number one position as Coonradt went on to his first career win in the division in the Coonradt Construction #00X over Edwards, Madsen, Brett Mortensen, and Tyler Bobar.
With the feature win, Coonradt now has a total of 26 wins at Fonda in four different divisions including 17 in the Street Stock division, seven in the Pro Stock division, and one each in the Limited Sportsman and regular 602 Sportsman divisions.
“We definitely needed this,” an emotional Coonradt said in victory lane. “We lost my grandmother on Wednesday, you know what tonight was it, it was our night. Tonight is for Gram. At the start AJ (Greco) pulled away there, they help us too, he is a great kid. We just kept working the top where I’m most comfortable and it came in. It is a pleasure to win in this field of people, everybody in the class is so competitive. But we finally got here”
The 20-lap Leatherstocking Credit Union Pro Stock feature started with Chucky Dumblewski leading lap one of the event with fourth place starter Ivan Joslin second after starting fourth. Joslin used the outside groove on the backstretch on lap four to take the lead with Nick Stone the new second place car on lap seven after starting ninth on the grid. Joslin and Stone were side by side at the line to complete lap seven with Joslin holding the lead at that point.
The halfway point saw Joslin leading with Stone, eighth place starter Beau Ballard, fourth place starter Luke Horning, and seventh place starter Kenny Gates in the top five. Joslin and Stone were side by side again at the line to complete lap 12 with Stone leading that lap by a nose. Joslin used the outside groove that got him to the lead to his advantage and by the time he and Stone entered turn two Joslin retook the lead in the event
Joslin went on to his first win of the 2025 season and the 17th of his career in the division in the One Zee Tees/Southside Beverage sponsored #49 and was followed in the top five by Stone, Ballard, Gates, and Horning.
“We’ve been on to something with this,” Joslin said after his win as he pointed to his race car. “This PlayFab car is really good, we just had to get some bugs out and tonight it all worked out. I watched the Sportsman and Modified features, and the top definitely came in, everybody went to the bottom, and I said thanks guys. This thing is a rocket right now.”
The 20-lap Leatherstocking Credit Union Pro Stock feature rain delayed from 6/28 saw Mike Hill lead the first five laps until teammate Beau Ballard got by him for the lead in the #15 team car. Ballard worked his way from his fifth place starting position up to second on lap three before taking the lead two laps later. The top five at the halfway point consisted of Ballard, Stone, Mike Hill, Ivan Joslin, and AJ Walters.
Ballard led the remaining laps for his third victory of the 2025 season in the Michael’s Auto & Trailer Sales #15 and the eighth of his career in the division with Stone, Hill, eighth place starter Kenny Gates, and Walters completed the top five.
“This thing is just a rocket,” Ballard said after the win. “To see all of these people over here (pointing to his crew), we’ve got three cars here tonight and I’ll tell you we work our butts off in the garage and it shows when we show up here. This is the third feature in a row that we’ve had both cars in the top five, we’re rolling right now and hopefully we can keep it going.”
Three lead changes highlighted an exciting Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. Limited Sportsman beginning with early race leader Jim Malia. Malia led the first four laps before Steve Wagoner took over the point on lap five. Four yellow flags slowed the event, the one on lap eight having the most effect on the event as Corky Warner took the lead on the restart after starting seventh and went on to a back to back win in the Carols Transportation #797 after his victory last Saturday.
It was Warner’s third career win in the division, and he was followed in the top five by 13th place starter Mason Gray, Wagoner, fifth place starter Lance Hill, and Malia.
First time winner Jason Peck (DOHC Four Cylinder) took the overall victory in the Fonda Fair Four Cylinder division while third place finisher Wayne Russell Jr. was the winner of the SOHC class. Kerrie Hollenback finished second overall while John Ray and Jay Ingersoll completed the top five after Russell. For Russell it was his ninth career victory at Fonda.
Next Saturday, July 12, AIM Autism & One Zee Tees presents Autism Awareness Night with pre-race fundraisers, music, a barbecue and more. All regular divisions will be in action plus the Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modified Series (MVVDMS) in competition with a Dave Lape Memorial event along with the Amsterdam Truck Center Modified feature postponed by rain from June 28. Racing is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
