Jared John Tops Weedsport’s James Shutts Memorial for Fourth Consecutive Year at Weedsport
Story By: DAN KAPUSCINSKI / WEEDSPORT SPEEDWAY – WEEDSPORT, NY – It had been a full year since Jared John visited Weedsport Kartway on Sunday, but the Elizabethtown, Indiana driver didn’t lose a step, as he rolled to his fourth consecutive victory in the PRO Clone Super Heavy James Shutts Memorial, worth $1,222.
John, the kartway’s winningest adult driver with 35 career victories, started the event from the second position and slipped to as far back as fifth before rebounding in the race’s second stage to claim his fourth win in the Shutts Memorial, dating back to 2022.
Western New York runner, Mike Seefeldt, earned the day’s PRP Fast Time Award and $100 to start from the pole position and led much of the early portion of the event until Matt Chavis stole the lead in lapped traffic just before halfway.
Chavis would hold the lead through lap 22 to earn $222 from Dan Kapuscinski Motorsports Promotions as the stage one winner. At the time Chavis led Seefeldt, Trent Smith, John, Trent Curtis and Mitchell Schreffler.
During the halfway break Chavis drew an invert pill of six, sending Chavis from the lead back to sixth for the final 22-lap run with Schreffler going away from the point ahead of Curtis, John, Smith, Seefeldt and Chavis.
Schreffler and Curtis held the front spots for as long as they could before John and Smith began to press. Eventually John and Smith would find their way to first and second with around 15-laps remaining and the front duo would never again be challenged.
Chavis was eventually able to rebound for third, after restarting sixth, with Seefeldt and Curtis finishing the top five spots. The top ten was filled by Nick Story, Dana Hugg, Mike Farina, Schreffler and Nick McGill.
A $1,000 to win main event was also held on Sunday for PRO Clone 375 with Tanner Emmons scoring the win. Emmons came on to top John in the 30-lapper ahead of Smith, Riley Begy and Chris Natoli. The win was Emmons’ third PRO Clone 375 victory of 2025.
Other PRO mains were won on Sunday by Levi Herriven (PRO Blue), Bryson Herriven (PRO Green) and Ryan Barry (PRO Purple).
Seth Whitney continued his winning ways in points action by scoring wins in both Clone Heavy and Clone Light. Whitney now trails John by only two victories on the all-time win list, at 33.
Prior to two podium finishes in PRO action, Smith also won his fourth Clone Super Heavy event of the season ahead of John and Seefeldt.
Jr. Red Clone put on perhaps the race of the season with a four-way clash at the finish. After leading the entire event, Maximus Wallace and Brantley Smith brushed wheels in the final corner to allow Cole Pike to charge to the outside and steal the win by a mere .057-seconds at the line. Wallace held on for second while Clark McGruder stole third from Smith, as Harloe Russell finished the top five. The front four karts were separated by only .948-seconds at the finish.
Bryson Herriven made his first start of the season in Jr. Green Clone and took a trip to victory lane ahead of Mason Simmons and Lily Walters.
Brother, Levi Herriven, also returned to Weedsport on Sunday and continued his winning ways, this time collecting his first win in Jr. Blue Clone. Herriven bested Joey Surman and Parker Allen.
Jr. Purple Clone saw Mason Kiah snag his second win of 2025. Jack Reid ran a strong second ahead of Laina Stewart.
Rookie Red Clone had a strong turnout of eight karts and utilized an A and B feature. Brantley Waldron secured his second consecutive win in the A feature, while Austin Shutts scored his first win, in his first start, in the B Feature.
Weedsport Kartway’s next event will take place on Sunday, September 28. All points classes will again be in action, as well as Jr. PRO, Rookie Red, and a $1,000 to win PRO Clone 375 main.
