Story By: DEVIL’S BOWL SPEEDWAY – WEST HAVEN, VT – Matt Janczuk didn’t even know if he would be able to defend his title this year. Janczuk put together a last-minute deal and made the nearly four-hour haul to Devil’s Bowl Speedway more than worthwhile as he scored his third consecutive win in the Fabian Earth Moving Vermont 200 on Sunday, pocketing the $10,067 winner’s share of the purse, plus lap money. The victory by Janczuk capped off an exciting two days of racing at the “Northeast’s Fastest Dirt Track.”

“Man, I’m speechless. This just kind of came together last minute. We talked about it earlier in the year, then we thought we couldn’t race this race because we moved up to modified earlier in the year,” Janczuk said in victory lane. It was just such a talented field. And I had to work for that one.”

Janczuk, who was driving a different ride than he had wheeled the last two years, piloting the Mike Richmond Motorsports 22x, was fast right out of the box, recording the quickest lap in time trials, giving him the pole for his heat race. At the redraw, Janczuk pulled the #11 chip from the bag, but wasn’t concerned, given the distance of the event. It turns out he had no reason to be.

Bobby Hackel and Donovan Lussier drew the front row starting spots, with Lussier leading the majority of the first segment of the event. Lussier led the first 20 laps, with circuit regular AJ Munger scoring as the leader for lap 21 before Lussier regained control. Lussier stayed at the point until lap 93 when Janczuk navigated his way around him for his first lead. After a caution on lap 107, most of the field came to pit road for a mandatory pit stop. Chad Edwards was among the handful of drivers who stayed out for track position and took over the top spot for 10 laps before Brian Calabrese wrestled the lead away on lap 117. Calabrese held the lead until lap 169 when Janczuk slid underneath him to nab the point again and never gave it back. Payton Talbot, who started 20th on the grid after having to qualify through the consolation round, moved to third before falling back to 16th during the pit sequence and charging back up to second. Despite several shots at him on restarts in the waning laps and Talbot could not solve Janczuk. Talbot could get underneath him in turns one and two, but a strong bite off the corners propelled Janczuk down the straightaway as he pulled away for the win. Talbot finished in the runner-up spot, followed by Cody McPherson, Tyler Corcoran, and Nick Heywood. Heywood, an Airborne Park regular, claimed the Elmo’s Pit Stop Hard Charger award after improving an impressive 27 positions. Dave Camara was the highest finishing Devil’s Bowl regular, crossing the line in the eighth spot.

Josh Bussino was a winner on two different fronts at the event. Bussino not only cruised to an easy win in the Renegade feature race, but he also got down on one knee and proposed to his fiancée in victory land, and she said, “Yes.” Bussino fired from the number two spot and took the lead as soon as the green flag was in the air. That was all she wrote. The Cuttlingsville, VT driver, who has a ton of experience at the track in a variety of cars, led start to finish, building a lead of an entire straightaway. Tyler Fellows, Chris Murray, Andrew Fitzgerald, and Tyler Irwin rounded out the top five.

The Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprints were also on the card as they finished off a three-segment weekend with two final features. Destin St. Clair had his best run of the season, earning his first win of the season in segment two. St. Clair was followed across the line by Alyssa Vanderpool, Gage Provencher, Jordan Zak, and Levi Cram. Provencher flew from the back of the pack of the inverted field to win segment three. Provencher, Cram, and Jordan Zak came into the final segment tied with eight points each. The win gave the driver, known as “Pigboy,” the overall weekend win with nine points. Quinn Quenneville, who won Saturday’s opening segment, was second, and Levi Cram third.

The Hoosier Racing Tire Noice Sportsman competed in heat races on Saturday and ran their feature event on Sunday. Gavin Fleury, in only his third start in a race car, jumped to the lead from the pole position and led green to checkers to collect his first career win. Fleury, who came to dirt racing from snowcross, has adapted quickly to an open-wheeled modified and appears to be on his way to a bright future. Rob Steves followed Fleury across the line. Rob Steele was third, Aiden Benoure fourth, and Matt Little fifth. The points race in the division is fierce, as Raelin Dunham, who finished seventh, led Benoure by two points, and just 26 points separate the top four.

The Fisher Auto Parts Mini Stocks also wrapped up their two-day weekend with a feature event won by Brian Blake. Blake won the track championship last year but has struggled this season and is currently sitting in eighth place in the standings. Bob Wood broke out to the early lead, holding the top spot for six laps. Jon Jordan edged ahead for one lap before Blake took the lead. Blake held off a fast-charging Chris Charbonneau to park his car in victory lane for the first time this season. Jordan was third, followed by Kaleb Shepard and Wood.

The spectacular Fabian Earth Moving Vermont 200 weekend event began on Saturday with Payton Talbot running away with the DirtCar 358 feature while leading every lap. Talbot credited drawing the pole starting position and taking advantage of his stellar track position for his success. With runners such as Tim Fuller, Felix Roy, and Mike Mahaney in the field, Talbot knew he had to fashion the largest lead possible. The South Berlin, NY driver did just that, and the others couldn’t chase him down as he rolled to the win. Fuller placed second, Justin Stone third, Kevin Chaffee fourth, and Mahaney fifth.

The Sunoco Sportsman Modifieds went head-to-head in the 25-lap “Non-Winners Shootout.” The list of eligible drivers was a surprising one, as many of those entered have usually won by this point in the season. It appeared as if Justin Comes would roll to an easy win, as he cruised for the first 21 laps. Brent Warren was driving in the tire tracks of Comes, staying as close to him as possible. When the caution came out on lap 20, setting up the final of several restarts, Warren was able to power past Comes for the lead, drive away for the elusive win. Comes held on for a second, followed by Michael Wagner-Fitzgerald, Vince Quenneville, and Marty Kelly.

Gary English began the year hot, but has struggled in recent weeks. After a complete overhaul of his machine last week, English pulled off his biggest win of the season in the “Win and You’re in the Vermont 200” event for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman. Katrina LeCaire, who is hungry for her first win of the season, fired from the second spot and led the early stages. LeClaire held the point for the first 25 laps before English passed her on lap 26. Jason Quenneville, who entered the weekend as the points leader, took the lead briefly on lap 29, but English drove back around him the following lap and drove off for the win, punching his ticket to the big show. Quenneville finished second, followed by LeClaire, William Duprey, and Cory Castell.

The Xtreme Dirt Midgets made their first and only appearance of the season on Sunday, and a familiar face ran away with the win. Chris Murray, who has a solid resume of wins at Devil’s Bowl in a variety of race cars, took the early lead and was never challenged in the feature event. Brandon Piatska led the opening lap, but Murray made his move to the lead on lap two and drove off into the afternoon sun. Brandon Piastka finished second, Daniel Piastka third, Johnny Bruno fourth, and John Forlano fifth.

After a couple of rough weeks where his efforts were slowed down by hitting the wall and mechanical breakdowns, Eric Friend returned to his winning ways in the 9th State Cannabis Crown Vic feature. Friend had been untouchable until problems cut his nights short a couple of weeks in a row. On this night, Friend sprang from the third starting position to the lead on the opening lap and cruised to an easy win. TJ Knight, Bradford Cram, Norm Morrill, and Scott Richner rounded out the field.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway is back in action on Saturday, September 6th, for “Heritage Family Credit Union Night.” All Heritage Family Credit Union members are admitted Free! There will also be Kids Bike Races at intermission. Racing will include the Sportsman Modifieds, Limited Sportsman Modifieds, Novice Modified, 500cc Mini Sprints, Mini Stocks, and an Enduro.
