Column By: JOE PHILLIPS / RPW – SUSQUEHANNA, PA – While New York and Pennsylvania are enduring the polar vortex known as winter, many modified and sportsman drivers have headed south to Florida throughout the past few weeks.

Many drivers in other classes in the Northeast aren’t as fortunate to have these opportunities and are currently turning wrenches and staying warm to pass the time. Thoughts of spring are on their minds, and they are chomping at the bit to get back to the racetrack. Once spring finally does arrive, these drivers will be part of the backbone of many of our local tracks.

One such driver is Ryan David-Kadaronak, driver of the #22 600cc modified at the Penn Can Speedway.

Ryan started racing in 2022. His Uncle Butch and Rich Green were huge influences on his career. Uncle Butch allowed Ryan to drive a 600cc modified for a year, and Ryan then jumped into his grandfather’s 600cc modified after that. Currently, Ryan is the co-owner of the team he drives for currently.

A few short years ago, Ryan and his father traveled out to Elma, Indiana to purchase a 2017 Excel 600cc modified. After combining both his Uncle Butch’s and his grandfather’s numbers, Ryan arrived at the number “566”, which was his initial car number.

Now, many may feel that the 600cc modifieds are an entry level division and are only a step above go-karts. Nothing is farther from the truth. Suzuki engines are featured in each car, which altogether weighs only 900 pounds with the driver included. This is a serious weight to horsepower ratio. If you combine that with the fact that this is a class has a very large number of competitors, it makes the division ultra-competitive. Every victory is earned, and nothing is given.

Ryan started his career similar to others, wheeling at the late Five Mile Point Speedway, while also making appearances at Afton, The Hill, Thunder Mountain, Penn Can, and Woodhull Speedway.

Ryan earned his first two victories during the 2023 season at Five Mile Point. Ryan also concluded the year by winning the Fall Championship at Five Mile Point. Ryan also expanded his trophy case by capturing his 3rd and 4th career victories at Afton.

Ryan David-Kadaronak hopes that 2026 will bring plenty of victories and more success to their program. Ryan mentioned the possibility of making some appearances at the Hustle the Highway 600 Series races but is unsure if that will happen or not.

No matter what, Ryan hopes that he can stay true to his family principles while racing his way, hard and honest!

Ryan wishes to thank all of his sponsors and supporters: X-Treme Deals aka Snack City, Jennings Street Brassie, Trackside Products,  Barnett Brother Excavating, Cavemans BBQ, The Carluntic, Bakers Plumbing and Heating, Jim Rollos State Farm, Fastline Media, Country Roads Cornhole, L&S Home Improvement, Performance Food Groups, The Bickham Family, Ideal Bowling Center, Terry’s Twisted Teas, Lawnsense, Stus Bar, Sodan Services, Bodies by Scooby, and his biggest fan: Cash Oakley. He also wants to give a huge thanks to Mom, Dad, Stepdad, Nina and his entire family for always being some of his biggest supporters.
