Story By: SCHAFFER’S OIL SPRING NATIONALS SERIES – MODOC, SC – In front of a standing-room-only crowd in the grand reopening event at Modoc Speedway on Friday night, Brandon Overton owned the evening to record the ‘Ed Basey Memorial’ victory! The Evans, Georgia superstar earned Fast Time honors during qualifying prior to securing a win in the first heat race of the night. After starting on the pole of the 54-lap headliner, Brandon thrilled his home area fans by leading each and every circuit en route to the popular triumph at the refurbished facility.

Brandon fought back all challenges throughout the contest and ultimately finished 2.304 seconds ahead of his younger brother Cody Overton to claim the $10,004 first place prize. Cody, who started sixth on the grid, battled back from a flat right rear tire on lap 21 to capture the impressive runner-up performance. Zack Mitchell started seventh and climbed to as high as second in the running order before rounding out the podium in third. Outside polesitter Carson Ferguson grabbed a fourth place effort, while Garrett Smith nabbed the final spot inside of the top five at the checkers.

“Just a special, special race to win,” Overton exclaimed in victory lane at the Modoc, South Carolina speedplant. “I always looked up to Ed (Basey). He was one of my heroes when I was growing up. I remember sitting in those same bleachers watching him pass Kelly Guy or whoever, on the outside here. I thought that was the coolest thing ever. So, to come back and win the first one they have at Modoc is really cool!”

Brandon Overton’s eleventh career Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series and twelfth career Spring Nationals Series win came aboard a Riggs Motorsports-owned #76 Longhorn Chassis with sponsorship in part from Budweiser, Dude Wipes, Heartbeat Hot Sauce, Garnto Southern, Riggs Fiber, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Big Dog Stump and Tree Service, RW Powell Construction, Supply Chain Management, Muscle Factory, VG Performance, Bilstein Shocks, and Boswell Oil Company.

A total of 26 Super Late Model competitors were on hand for the inaugural ‘Ed Basey Memorial,’ which was co-sanctioned by both the Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series presented by Showtime Properties and the Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals Series presented by Coltman Farms Racing and fueled by Sunoco. Carson Ferguson laid down the quickest time during hot laps, while Brandon Overton went fastest in qualifying around Modoc Speedway. The three heat races were won by Brandon Overton, Carson Ferguson, and Garrett Smith, while Brent Dixon emerged victorious in the lone consolation event.

Next up for both the Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series and the Spring Nationals Series will be the $20,053 to win ‘March Madness’ extravaganza on Saturday, March 21 at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, South Carolina. The pit gates will swing open at 2:00pm with the grandstands opening one hour later at 3:00pm. The Drivers Meeting is scheduled for 5:30pm and the first hot lap session will be set to roll off at 6:00pm.
